• gmp... whats the low down ?

hey guys, I am considering a gmp...wondering what the low down is on these guys ? their site is pretty vague , and other than being located in san dimas, theres no real info on who these guys are or where theyve been...... if anyone has a few, that can form an honest opinion on overall quality and neck profiles?, do tell !
the v's and firebirds look nice, the rest of the line [roxy]kinda reminds me of those old plastic italian maccaferris? not sure on the spelling of that line but maybe you get my drift..
    anyone ? thanks, john

I owned this one...it was a great guitar. A little more meat than a San Dimas profile, but has that same feel. Impeccable fit & finish.

I must say they do make a point to have nice tops on them...

I saw their display at Summer NAMM and it was killer. Very nice guitars and the finishes were amazing.

From what I have heard some of the guys that worked for Charvel back in the day are over there and they build great quality guitars. Chuckracer has had a few so I would chat with him. Someone on this board also bought the one that Easton Guitars had too. I think Sully had played it and said it was a great guitar. The sparkle finished necks are a bit fatter do to the finish. That is about all I know. There was a GMP forum too. Not sure if it is still around though.

Just great guitars. Despite the body shapes, they don't feel at all like Gibsons. They're much closer to Jacksons. I own a singlecut I picked up from Greg at BCR Music (www.bcrmusic.com) He has a nice Firebird in stock at the moment.

Here's a pic of mine. It was a NAMM 2004 model.

Re: gmp... whats the low down ?

I am a well-known GMP enthusiast! I've had a few GMPs, and every one was just amazing...the attention to detail is of "Custom Shop" level, and that's their normal run of guitars. I'll give you one cool example: I was taking the chrome covers off of the S. Duncans on one of my GMPs, and I noticed when I removed the screws on the pickup bezel, the screws were machine screws! What this means is that there are small brass threaded inserts countersunk into the body, so that the screws would never strip out. That in my opinion is above and beyond attention to detail. Also, where the binding on the headstock meets the binding on the fretboard, they melt the binding so that there's no visable line there...it sort of "morphs" into each other. They play like butter and sound like a million bucks. They are expensive for sure, but I've never felt like I paid too much for a GMP. In fact, I've always felt like I got more than my money's worth. Plus I'm an intonation freak (totally cursed with perfect pitch) and my GMPs are the ONLY guitars I've ever owned that I didn't have to tweak the intonation on. If you're thinking about buying one, I'd say do it...all the good stuff you heard is true, and you will not be disappointed. And I don't work for GMP, I swear.

I can only echo what Subvamp has said so well.
The quality and details are off the hook, workmanship is better than anything esle I've ever owned...amazingly cool guitars.

very cool guys...I appreciate the input....I am thinking a totally blk/wht checked out firebird.... not sure what thats gonna run... do these guys offer some kind of 6 on a side headstock ?....I want something different and the jackson dealers seem to be dragging their feet. I cant get a quote back to save my life...I've been waiting on a simply neckthrough strat quote from kevin e. since february of this year...and apparently jason at drum city no longer answers emails......john

I have spoke with GMP about a custom guitar from them. If you keep with their basic body style and head stock they don't charge extra for color changes, pickup config and knob placement. You can spend the xtra bucks on a kool paint job. Your looking around 2K ( street ) for a "modified" stock model. I will tell you that a double sided metal flake paint graphic is pricey. Over 1K list.

BTW, Crankdaddy has the ultra-kool cobra GMP.

Wild West guitars has been super to deal with on GMPs.

Did you discuss the upcharge for a Floyd, maybe?

I've been drooling over their Vs lately, but have never seen a Floyd version. Wondering how much extra this would be? Honestly, though, I'm probably not serious enough right now to bother a dealer with getting an answer to the question. Strongly thinking about doing this after NAMM, though - depending on what new J/C products happen then.

Re: gmp... whats the low down ?

I cannot say enough about my GMP Shelby Firebird.

You remember me writing to you, asking about your Wayne Star, Peedenmark? Well, that's what I was saving my money for. I found a vintage trem Hot Rod Flame Wayne Star, and I sold three of my guitars to get the money to buy it. Just before I was about to go get it, I saw this posted on Easton's site. My jaw hit the floor.

I had heard all about GMP's quality, attention to detail, etc. from Chuck and others, so I finally decided to get the Shelby instead of the Star. I have absolutely no regrets.

I've seen/played lots of cool guitars...but NOTHING compares to this. The quality and craftsmanship is second to none. The neck is a tad thicker than most of my other guitars, but it fits my hand perfectly. I love it.

I want more GMPs now...even the Roxie, which I used to think looked ridiculous. Now I think it looks badass. Couple that with GMPs quality and sparkle finishes, and you've got the coolest guitars on the planet. In fact, I was debating between the Cobra and the green sparkle Roxie at Wild West Guitars.

Bottom line: Buy one. Or three. You will not regret it.

Here are some photos, for your drooling pleasure:

Look at the attention to detail on the paint at the headstock...just a sliver of blue on each side:

Finally, here I am rockin' it hard at Irving Plaza in NYC last month:

No, but I have seen a few with floyds.
