  • I need info on John Sykes' Les Paul

Hey guys. I'm planning on getting a Les Paul and doing it up like John Sykes' because he's one of my favorites ever and I don't have a Les Paul so why the hell not?

His website has a tiny little photo of it and the written details are not very good so whatever info and pictures you can help me with would be great.

    Thanks a lot!

Yeah yeah, I'm going through a rediscovering my old school thing. I've been listening to a crapload of old Schenker and Sykes starting a couple weeks ago when the topic about Schenker's Dean came up. Funny how things make you dig through your cds!

From what I heard, his Black LPC is from early 70's.
Then another article says late 70's.
The pickups are Gibson Dirty Fingers.
The guitar has Chrome pickup rings and pickguard.
    Also Chrome parts.
I had a Greco version of John Sykes Replica when I was 15.
I saw one on E-bay for $500 or so.
Here is a Gibson Custom Shop replica based on 68 Authentic LPC.

One thing about Syke's Black Paul, it's beat to hell on the back. There was an article on it in a Guitar magazine last year I think (GW, Guitar, Guitar One, whatever) and they had some pics of it. The neck is almost completely bare wood, and the back has small areas still painted.

Thanks man! I noticed this picture does not have the silver ring around the pickup selector switch or maybe it's the quality of the picture.

YEa the one in the picture does not have the Silver ring.
Everythig else looks the same as John's.
I think these Chorme looking parts(pickguard) are Schecter made.

I think Gibson is now making these chrome parts available.

Re: I need info on John Sykes\' Les Paul

Allparts stocks all of the necessary parts to make your LP Custom look like Sykes. In the late 70's, early 80's, Gibson offered nickel hardware (not chrome) as an option, and it was $100 cheaper than gold, I believe. John Sykes is one from that era, and Phil Lynotte of Thin Lizzy supposedly gave John the encouragement to change out all of the hardware to nickel, so that his guitar would look distinctive from all of the other LP's out there. I have a LP Custom from 1981, and it came with nickel hardware, and a fine-tuning TP6 tailpiece. I swapped out the pickup rings on mine to chrome, because it really completed the look. I didn't go for the chrome 3-way trim ring, nor the chrome pickguard. I dig Sykes, but I don't really like owning someone else's guitar, or a replica etc.

Didn't the Greco Sykes models have ebony fingerboards and the whole LPC treatment? Very desireable, I'd say.

                          Greco LPC didn't have Ebony.
It was Rosewood but some were very dark Rosewood almost look like Ebony.

Dinky - My Greco LPC has an ebony board - not ebonized rosewood. I wonder if there are many out there - no sn either???
