Jems are overpriced. Gotta keep those big paychecks going to Steve, ya know.

Overpriced compared to what? A solid color DK1 will cost you $1500 new. I know this is sacrilege around here but I'd take a JEM over a DK in a heart beat. If you want a configuration similar to a JEM from Jackson you would have to go to the custom shop and we all know that'd be way more than a JEM.

Having said that - I got mine mint for $1k - I've since had the bridge swapped out for a Speed Loader.

Awsome guitars, I think they are over priced for what they are. I paid $700 for my shocking pink one, I loved everything on the guitar but the ibanez trem, and I never cared for Dimarzios. The quality on the guitars in my opinian are just a little bit above a MIJ Charvel, I was able to buy 2 charvels with the price from the JEM.

You're right, Tim. I wouldn't pay $1500 for a DK1 either.

I will definitly , at one point, order a Custom Jackson or KL with the inlays resembling those of a Jem, only even more grand.

If there's one thing I LOVE about Jems it's the inlays.

Re: Jems over priced?

I dont want to ruffle any feathers on this topic , I know many love jems , but heres some honest insight....
in the late 80s early 90s I was doing repairs in a small store here in s.e. wisconsin...this dealer was a huge kramer dealer back in '81-4, then went fender... when the jems came out he was hell bent he wanted a new superstrat kind of line so he picked up the ibanez...[I tried to talk him into jackson but the opening order was to big for his pocket book]....I will say he sold tons of jems , mainly to young kids.....lots of green vais and flashy paint jobs came through ....now realizing these were very popular at the time,I have to say on a scale of 1-10,I give them a 3.. out of the box these guitars appeared to be slammed together, in general the strings at the last fret were often 3/8" off the fingerboard, truss rods were hardly even tightened,,, they were essentially a better kitchen tool for slicing cheese than as playable guitars......... the bridges were cheap , the pickups were even worse, the sides of the fingerboard were very sharp feeling... and I cant even begin to tell you how many neck twist warranties we/I had to deal with early on...... further, I dont like recessed floyds, because you cant get under the strings to vary your tones and playing technique ....I believe they were in the $695 & up range when new....dont know what they go for now, but for as little as a used usa made soloist sells for ,and many other usa made set necks brands, I wouldnt even waste the time looking at a jem ...john

Re: Jems over priced?

I've become a pretty big Ibanez fan recently, but I'll readily admit that the JEMs are overpriced. They are definitely a bit nicer than the RGs, but you can buy a Japanese RG-1570 for $500 and with a little TLC get a guitar every bit as good as a JEM--you just have to try a few to get one made out of good pieces of wood. My RG620x sounds as good as any JEM I've played.

Also, the graphics/inlays/cutouts on the JEMs are a bit too busy for me. I prefer the cleaner look of the RGs.

USA Jacksons are definitely a better value than the JEMs, but the Japanese RG Ibanez are a better value than the Japanese Jacksons.

Re: Jems over priced?

I don't have any experience with Jems but I recently picked up a used Universe 777 cause I needed a 7 for recording and when I got it I was really amazed by how nice it is. The quality on this one is really good even though I'm not a huge fan of bolt ons. It was a nice surprise seeing as how I generally have to buy online cause I don't like driving 2-3 hours to check out guitars, And I don't know about Jems but if they're consistent with these they can be had cheap used.

Not only Jems, most of bolt on guitars are way overpriced.
IMO.

I'll agree that most boltons are over priced, lots more time involved to get a neckthrough right the first time than just poppin on or shimmin necks .....

I was at GC today and there on the wall was a brand new jem,the white one.It is a very eye catching guitar to be sure, and after playing it a bit it seemed to be of very good quality. But it was priced at 1969.00....that seems to high.So I guess I would have to say it is over priced(new at least). That being said I would definitely take one for 1200 ish.
