Pete, if you haven't already..take off the neck and see the stamps in the body and neck.. it may lead you find the model. Is it made in USA? It's dang cool whatever model it is. If you want to move it, let me know.
Different shape, too. Also, there are a FEW 24-fret 540PIIs out there, but they're insanely rare. I don't think they were available in the USA market at all.

It could have been from the now defunct Ibanez Custom Shop...

That's possible. What's the serial number, and what's on the plate?
I've seen one other guitar exactly like this one. I'm thinking they may be prototypes for a model that didn't make it into production, test models (occasionally, Ibz will test out lines by releasing them in limited numbers), or possibly a rare or special model made for a foregin market, a few of which found their way over here.

Eristic - I had a bensalem logo'd 540PII (like alex skolnick played) that had 24 frets and two humbuckers. It was crazy cool, but the neck warped bad.

That's a real shame. :^( Us Ibz fans tend to wet ourselves just over the regular version of that guitar, and the 24-fretter is one of the holy grails to the guys that dig the shape. Did yours have the funky little pickguard?
Nice score Pete, dig the matching headstock. is that desert yellow? a buddy of mine had a 550 in yellow and it was hard on the eyes at home but under the stage lights it really looked great.
Yeah, I may pull the neck and see what's stamped on there... I put it for sale on the jemsite bb, should be interesting. Guess I should list it here too. I just feel weird having something that is rare like this, since the first thing I'd do is sand off the finish on the back of the neck and boiled linseed oil it. That tends to ruin collectibility.
