Re: New James Hetfield Signature Guitar 2005

The King V was destroyed. He also bought the Explorers in the same timeframe. He took to the Explorers and not the V. He may not have played it much, but he did bring it on tour. I have an interview somewhere around here where he states the white Flying V was an Epiphone. He also mentioned something about working in a print shop and making the logo for it. Either way, here is a shot of him from behind with that guitar. You can see the neckplate.

James may still have the King V in its broken form. I know he still has the white bolt on V which is supposedly broken (they had a picture session with it a few years ago) and he still has the first double neck that was destroyed as well.

Either JH or KH had a Fernandes V. Not sure which one of them owned it.

He was still using the old V at that time too. Here is a pic with him and the old V in 1997.

The ESP Mxs are hands down great guitars unfortuantley I had to let two go on Ebay for next to nothing. At least I still have my ESP with midle finger inlays explorer. By the way Jim I read somewhere that James actually forgot who made that V but that it was a copy for sure that he put a Gibson logo on.

On the Cliff Em All DVD Kirk plays a Fernandes Strat. He does have a couple Vs but there are never any good enough shots to tell.

I read he loved the V but the headstock broke and luckily he had an Explorer for a backup and started using that.

He broke the headstock on his cheesy V copy. He was using his explorers back in late 84 before he got his Jackson.

I am thinking it was a time of experimentation for him. He received the Jackson in May 1985, so it is feasible he ordered it in 1984, probably when he bought his first Explorers. There are pics of him with the King V as late as the AJFA era, so he sure didn't retire it before it was broken.

He also claimed in one interview that after the first year Gibson did those no pickguard Explorers, they changed the wood and he wasn't happy with the change. He prefers first year (1983?) versions of those guitars.

I have only seen personally 84 and 85 no pickguard versions of those explorer. I have an 84 so my opinion is a little biased.

You can find info on James' and Kirk's flying V copys here , and a lot of other Metallica gear here
The black and the white one are really beautiful IMO...certainly a LOT of history in those!
Kirk had a Fernandes strat around garage days and AJFA, hell I even found a photo at monty jay's where he's holding an aria pro II...WTF was he thinking
As for the photo of James in the couch playing several V's, I have one where there are 4 identical gibson V's in a couch, and 1 in his lap.
All are black with gold hardware and pickups, and a white pickguard. I'll upload it when I can find it...Meanwhile, here are a couple of cool ones:

Around 1982-83...

Here is a cool one from a show in Norway 1986 where John Marshall (James' tech) is playing what seems to be a white Jackson King V??!
As you might know, this was during James' recovery from his skateboard accident..or whatever
