• do I want a Universe?

I was looking around the web for prices on the Ibanez Universe guitars-only about 1500 bucks, and that was not even at one of the big dealers-MF, Samash, etc. don't even have them listed. I may want to look into one if Santa is cash happy this year. ANyone know of a good online dealer or dealer in PA who actually has one of these that I can see in person? Alternately I may want a JEM, but for some reason they are more expensive.

Why not talk to Matt? There's one listed at $1,570.00, but he will beat any competitor's price.

I have a Universe. It's very fun to play. I think it sounds like piss, but the neck is awsome! The worst sounding, best playing guitar I have. That's just my opinion. I'd still buy another, and just use it home.

If you want a 7-string, you won't do much better than a Universe, in my opinion, unless you go Jackson Custom Shop or something like that. And $1,500 won't get you into *that* realm...

If you just want a 7 string, look on eBay right now. A USA Schecter Sunset 7, for a decent BIN.

Better guitar than the Uni, less money. I also think that the Korn guitars are actually better sounding than the Uni, and they're cheaper, I think.

The Universe may be the one that started the 7 string craze, but very few people I know that play 7 have one - the feeling is that they're over priced.

Re: do I want a Universe?

It is not so much that I want a seven string (hell, I can barely play 6) I just want one. I get on these kicks where I want something real bad and I shop around and save up money, and then when the time comes to buy it-I sit down with myself and decide whether I can really afford it. I was looking at the JEMs and I like the blue one, but I also like the balck with mirror pickguard on the UV. I don't care for the black crackle finish on the one JEM at all. If they still made the UV's in the swirly colors I would probably sell one of my kidney's to get one-I really liked the green and black, and strangely, the purple. The regular multi color ones were cool to even though they had alot of pink in them. I'm weary of spending that much dough onthe bay, and here in central PA there aren't alot of places who even carry that sort of thing new, much less used.

D.M.-if you still have it, shoot me a pic. I had no idea I could even approach a used one for that much! I was thinking minmum of 900-1000 for one of the less popular ones in good shape. I haven't had time to check the bay for going prices lately....

You can't. I don't know when he tried selling it but even the plain black w/green dots go for at least $800 (I don't know why they've gone up recently, they are so boring). I am a Jemsite member and have a saved search in eBay for Universes that I check almost every day. You can actually get a used version of the current style (black w/pyramids, mirror pickguard, etc.) for around $900. I even had a chance at a green one (w/the maple board -very rare!) for $1000 but didn't pull the trigger. Back to my point, you aren't going to find a Uni for $600 (unless it's crap) but you can definitely get a nice one for under $1000.

IMO the RG 1077XL and her newer brothers sound and play better. But then again, I´ve never been a fan of standard scale seven strings, always found the low b muddy

Blech, pfui, blargh. Me recommending an Ibanez, somebody shoot me before this spreads

Nothing wrong with recommending an Ibanez, we're in the "guitars by other manufacturers" section.
If you're not dead-set on a Universe there are some other nice 7-strings out there. Michael mentioned the Korn model (K7). Some people will knock it because the big K7 inlay or simply because of its origin (stupid) but it a really good sounding guitar with an INCREDIBLE neck. And they're less than a Uni. Or for bang-for-the-buck, there's the RG7620 - about $400 used. Notice all my recommendations are Ibanez guitars. If you want a good 7-string you can't go wrong with the company that started 'em - IMO.
