• Mako guitars

Aside from the MAKO shark, does anyone know anything about these guitars?
More importantly, their country of origin and/or history.
I got a killer Les Paul copy with a quilt top (laminate) and very tight build quality. Even the no-name 'pups sound EXTREMELY PAF-ish.

The model I have is a "56".. And the headstock reads "MAKO" Traditional Series" and has a 56 on the truss rod cover.

Any info ?

This is one of those "You could have it if you can pry it out of my cold dead hands" guitars. Phenomenal value for what you get.

I think not but info is scarce at best on these. I seen a couple reviews at HC and everybody their seemed to like em as much as I do.

I'd love to know who actually built this thing.

My first axe was a Mako Rhoads. In all respects practically identical to a Hondo, but with a faster neck IMO...

AFAIK the company doesn´t exist anymore

Makos I ever saw were total turds and had the 'hondo' vibe to em. However, you may have snagged an upper end model, or one that someone spent a lot of setup time on, etc... but the few that I've seen made Charvettes look like Suhrs.

I remember seeing their ads in all the metal rags back in the day - Hit Parader, Circus, Metal Edge... Seems to me they were a Korean knock-off company. They took everyone else's body designs and put their necks on them, which were alot like the Tokai/Old Kramer style. It think they were on par with alot of the Series 10/GTX stuff.

I usually stay away from the Hondos and Harmonys and GTX and Arbor guitars of the world but this particular LP is pretty cool. It's obviously not a Gibson but It beats the shit out of an Epiphone or LTD..

In the early to mid 80's they were one of the "KINGS" of copy. Warlock, Bitch, V's, Explorers and alot of Strats. They made some decent "for the money" guitars. I think they were made in Korea.

Kinda scary, eh? And very Hondo-ish.
