I don't understand why there are so many signature strats when they're almost all the same. The only ones that have any real unique features (that I know of, I could very well be ignorant) are the Malmsteen and Blackmore strats.
The street price ends up being about 300-400 more for the USA artist models. For that you get more finish options, different neck profiles, different pickups, other electronics options, etc.
In the case of the Mexican made artist models the price difference is even less and you still get upgraded hardware, more finish choices, and/or upgraded electronics. Take the Buddy Guy Strat for example compared to a standard. That's 549 vs. 349 on the street. For the 200 premium you get upgraded hardware, different neck, cool polka dot finish, and a gigbag. The finish would cost you more than 200.
Is it worth it? I dunno - are the different features worth a few hundred bucks to you?
All the manufacturers charge a premium for artist models. Look at Jackson - why does a PC1 list for $700 more than a DK1?

with that ej model it has the old nitro finish which alot of people think make tho old ones sound better. i dont really think i could hear it but it is a difference from a usa standard.
This strat has many features that you can only get from the custom shop. My guess is that it's going to be a really hot seller and pricey too. Everything from the finish to the neck radius to the custom wound pickups (Eric Johnson is very picky about his pickups, they are a big part of his signature tone) set this strat apart from other signature models. This will fall into the ranks with the:
Malmsteen
Blackmore
Beck
Vaughan
Dale
I never thought that the Cray or the Clapton were special enough. The Cray is basically a stock reissue with a hardtail and the Clapton is just a Plus with a signature on the headstock.
Well, it looks like a plain jane boring Strat, so I'm sure one will be in my store soon enough! (they don't like to send us exciting things much) I'll be sure to check it out for you guys.
Better off buying a 57 reissue. If those pickups will sell seperatly, put that in the 57 reissue. Saves alot of money [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Good point but I wouldn't count on getting those pickups without getting the entire strat. What I heard is that Eric uses a Dimarzio HS3 in the bridge position that is wired for single coil only. His middle position pickup is a 57 and is installed backwards. The neck is a stock 57. I will try one out if I ever get the chance. It has to be a nice strat considering how long Eric has been playing them and how long it took Fender to release one.
Eric Johnson's Strat should have larger frets than the vintage small frets..
That would be one thing I would like about it.
Also like Jimmy mentioned, 12 radius neck and the neck looks nice.
