yep thats why i sold the SG-Z. that & the neck was way too small. hairline cracks in the neck/body joint. binding cracks at the fret ends. tho the fretboard was perfect, the frets were done surprisingly well.

Isn't the SG-Z more recent? From only like five years ago or so?

Was there any such thing as the "SG-X"? I think the guitar Toejam's describing is the All American-I (but of course I could be wrong). I had one for a while, it had an unbound 24-fret fingerboard with dot inlay, no pickguard and a fat neck.

I also found a pic of the V-90 with the one hum, Steinberger trem configuration. In canary yellow.

I'd trade one of my 1980 Gibson V's for one of those V-90's, EXP-V, or an SG-X or Z!!!

that brings me to another question: regarding the 1980 models V's, mine have a thinner body than a standard, say, '67 V, by roughly 1/8th of an inch...has anyone ever noticed this and can give an explanation as to why? They both have MADE In USA with 1980 year serial #'s stamped into the back of the headstock like any Gib V, plus, they both have all the Gibson hardware and truss rod covers with proper fitment (original screwholes line up, etc.)...this just seems like an odd year for the Gibson V in terms of specs...

the SG-X is not the same as the SG-Z or SG90. the X is a cheaper model based on a normal SG standard. the 90/Z has the neck & body based on the 61 reissue. slightly different bevels & smaller neck joint. the Z was only offered as a string thru & 2 colors, that greenish blue called verdigris or platinum white & made in 98 only. the SG90 was offered with steinberger trem or string thru & a few color choices.
I want a V-90 string thru badly but they are hard to find. ive seen alot of problems with the gibson installed trems on those guitars.

After 6-ish beers I decided that I kinda dig the semi-rosewoodized ebony so I got out my handy-dandy fret corrosion repair kit (1 9V batters and a bit of 1500 grit sandpaper) and got down to business. Fifteen minutes and probably no irreparable damage later I discovered that the Dremel's charger is MIA so polishing the frets is going to have to wait for another day but in a fit of "seemed like a good idea at the time" I went ahead and strung it up anyway.

New strings and scraping years worth of crud off of the frets did wonders for this one (duh). Even though the frets aren't glassy-smoth it plays pretty well and the action is medium/low, I think I'll like it a lot when the frets are in a bit better shape. The nut is 1 5/8" but the E strings are cut in just a bit farther from the edge of the neck than the Jacksons I'm used to with the result being that the high E feels a just little out of place. Very comfortable sitting down which was a bit of a surprise to me (this is my first Explorer). I really like the 25 1/2" scale and would definitely do the deal for this one again, it's most likely a keeper.
