Stupid GMW question

Now that Lee can no longer do stratheads, and the fact that he will now begin serializing - what is the likelihood that early non-serialized guitars have the potential to gain status and collectability similar to the "San Dimas Mojo" or "pre-pro" phenomenon that surrounds Charvels and Jacksons? This would especially apply if GMW ever gains huge popularity.

When Lee called me with the news, I was bummed - it was the end of an era. I also joked with him that this would happen and that, in response, people would probably start building GMW fakes soon. Just like SD Charvels. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

IMHO, the values will hold. Maybe rise with time a little, as they become more rare. They're great guitars - top notch in every regard. But don't expect to use them as an investment piece to retire on. ...Or any guitar, for that matter.

Well, that's a lot of "if's"!

The thing that made the San Dimas Charvels so collectable was less the actual guitar and more the era they represent. As we players who grew up in the eighties are getting older, we can buy the guitars our hero's then played, the Charvels and Jacksons. Thats the draw right there. The eighties were a wild and magical time if you lived through them, never to be repeated. These guitars represent these times. Rose colored glasses, baby!
There are no hero's playing these guitars anymore, so in my o-pinion, there's little chance of GMW's of any era, or the new charvels, neckplates be damned, turning into big collectors items in the future.

You'd need a lot of intangibles to come together to make that happen.

I agree. I think that a correct SD copy with a cool top or classic graphic will actually gain some value, however, they should stay way below real "collector" pricing.

The ones that I own on the other hand will probably not be worth anything to anyone but me because of the features that I asked for! [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

I think they will rise a little bit, just because you can't get a new one anymore. But as far as reaching SD status Chuck nails that point right on the money, I don't think it's going to happen for all of those reasons. plus outside of this circle most people don't even know who GMW is.

I dont think they will ever reach the SD Charvel value, but I have seen a few GMW on ebay that have been way overpriced just because of the strat headstock.

I don't think they will appreciate in value at all. there is no serial numbers on them. someone could build a replica and you wouldn't know its a GMW or a custom woods body and neck...imho. I love my GMW and it quickly became my favorite since I had it built to my specs.

the value of old charvels is also the rarity of serial#'d guitars, im not talking about prepros. thier are less than 6000 serial#'d guitars total. around 1/4 of them being strat headstocks. many of these guitars have been modded, destroyed, or have become parts mutts. most of us remember back when these things were pretty worthless, & when adding a OFR or Kahler was the thing to do. shit i remember selling some of my charvels for $4-500 & being happy i got that for it. GMW is nothing like that, especially now that they arent charvel replicas. just like waynes i think he would have sold alot more guitars if they would have been strat headstocks & more accurate copies of the originals. BTW custom woods necks are close but not the same as GMW or charvel.

What different about the custom woods neck? Is the strathead shape a little different from GMW/Charvel?

I agree - as an 80's guy myself, I have always wanted to own a San Dimas strat.

Yes,some have seen them,no,they will not be shown till Lee/GMW are ready to release them,end of story!!
