• GIbson LP advice needed

I don't know very much about the Gibson LP's. What exactly should I look for in buying a new one? I am looking for either a real player or a minor investment. Not both. What designates what is going to be worth anything down the road? So far about the only thing I do know is I hate the 50's neck. I tend to favor the 60's neck....

Any information anyone can give me would be highly appreciated.

    Thank you.

when & where it was made & how original it is. also if its a deluxe, standard or custom. the deluxe has the mini hums otherwise the same as a standard, the standard single ply binding trapaziod inlays RW board. custom multi ply WBWBW, block inlays ebony boards. some of the 70's ones have 3 piece necks. also the bodys were sandwiched mahogany for some years not. if your looking for cheap player look for modded ones, deluxes that have been routed for full size hums are nice when you can find one, since this usually kills collectable value. if you want minor investment look for a nice top, as original & mint as possible.

The Les Paul Classic is virtually the same as the Standard except with the slim '60s neck profile. Perhaps a used Classic is in order for you?

The Classic has different pickups as well, plus the inlays are different.

Ahh yes, forgot about that. Some people on the Les Paul Forum prefer the raunchy sound of the ceramic (498/500?) pickups in the Classic compared to the warmer alnico (Burstbuckers?) in the Standard. All really depends on you though.

Well that was quite the mother-load of information. Thanks all. I don't know if I want a player or something to put on display as of yet. Although I see a classic with the 498/500 pups hmmmmmm

Think you should maybe put the guitar inquiry on hold till you work out the home front issue!

I bought an older LPC that had been moded for a kalher. Because it was not original and the kalher mod route prevents and easy restore (for most except our very own Bloodsplatter that is), I got a good deal on it. It was played to death and needed frets. EMGs, frets and a pro set up later and I have a killer player that is for me the perfect LP.

Get a used one cheap and see how you like these guitars. They are body heavy many times and definately not for everyone. You can always trade up if you decide you want a wall hanger etc.

                My $0.02.

That is rather cool looking. I really like the wine red, if that is what that color is called?

P.S. My son is abck to his jeans and t-shirt and no more makeup :feew:

If you want just a great, no frills player, get a Studio. Though, I don't know if they come with the '60s neck or just the '59 rounded profile. I love the '59 neck, but I know some models are available with both as an option.

                        Re: GIbson LP advice needed

There are many things to look at and consider. If you prefer ebony fretboards, you're probably going to be limited to the Voodoo Les Paul, the Standard Limited Edition, the Supreme, and the Custom. Do you prefer nickel, chrome, or gold hardware? If you prefer warm, thick sustain, you may lean toward the Customs and Supremes. If you lean more towards a crunchy tone, you may be pleased with the Classics. Customs, as well as Supremes, have full body and headstock binding.

I have six Pauls and they all weigh different amounts. I've seen Pauls as light as 8.5 lbs and as heavy as 13. I've heard of heavier, but schit, musta been designed for Arnold.

I've seen numerous people say that a Classic is the same as a Standard except for the pickups. That's not true. Most, if not all, Classics use nickel hardware versus chrome. Both models use a tune-o-matic bridge, however, the Classics bridge is not near as beefy and will rattle/buzz. I recommend jerking that bastard out and replacing it with a Nashville tune-o-matic bridge.

Finally, if you prefer slimmer necks, you're probably going to lean towards the Classics. However, every once in awhile, you can find Limited Edition Customs with the thin profile. I have a black '95 Custom with a slim profile neck. Go to my site and check out the picks and maybe it'll help you make a decision. Good Luck!

Your Big Red is beautiful, Germandeth.

And the Sharkhead is really cute.

But DAMN, I always like looking at that black Custom. Pickguard stock, or none?

what kind of different tones can you get, if you have different kinds of hardware?

and does binding have an effect on the sound? (these questions might be stupid, but i'm wondering dammit. lol)
