Re: GIbson LP advice needed

You aun't seen nothing yet! I'll probably post pictures of my Doubleneck USA Jackson Full Floater within the next few days.

My black '68 Custom has a pickguard. The black '95 also has a pickguard, but it's in the case. I like the look of a black LP without a guard.

really? so nickel, chrome, and gold all have different variations? do you know what contributes to what kind of sound?

and does binding affect tone also?

p.s. bro- the Alpine white studio and fugly platinum studio rock the ebony boards too.

does gibson use lower quality ebony on these, do you think germandeth? what do you think of studios?

I wouldn't say binding affects tone to any serious degree. I prefer at least a bound headstock and fretboard, whether it's with shell inlay, synthetic material, or wood.

do nickel and chrome hardware look very different? Since it seems to me that both would look kinda silvery...

I have guitars with chrome hardware, but I am not sure if I have ever seen nickel hardware in person.

Are you finished yet? Next time, I'll try not to lump my sentences together so that you'll have a slightly tougher time extracting humor. Until then, take one of your "bound" headstock guitars, place the tip against your Adam's Apple, strike the low E string with your toe, all the while cramming your pinky in a wall socket. Get back with us with the results.

dude, i'm asking pretty legit questions. i was really wondering, not "extracting humor". and a guy who knows about les pauls (so it seems), i figured you could help me out. I'm glad you took the time to kindly tell me that you thought i was jesting with you. but i wasn't, thanks for the intelligent, non-barbarian reply, means a lot.

God Bless, and have a nice Day .

                        Bless you child!

Some people feel that there is a tonal difference between nickel and chrome plated nickel. I think it's hogwash. Un-chromed nickel has a tendency to tarnish and gives instruments that vintage appearance without showing fingerprints as does chrome. Two other perceptions is that nickel transfers string vibration better than chromed nickel. Again, I have not seen, experienced, or read anything to validate that information. Some people also feel that nickel is lighter in weight. If so, it's minimal and damn sure not something that will show up on the bathroom scales. That is, unless you have a HUGE guitar.

Binding is a cosmetic aspect and if it contributes to tonal qualities, it would be an insignificant level.

As for ebony fretboards on lower end LPs, I've only seen a couple and the grain didn't seem to be quite as tight, but that may have been my old eyes acting up. It stands to reason that Gibson as well as other manufacturers would use better pieces of wood on their high dollar items. I'm sure that if they have experts picking out primo blocks for maple tops, I'm sure some guy is standing there doing the same for fret wood.

And finally Studios. I'm yet to see a Studio I didn't like. They play extremely well and are probably Gibsons best bang for the buck.

                        Are we cool?

Yes, it's cool, but it's also been refinished and the pickups changed. Refinishing guitars "kills" resale value by as much as 50 percent.
