I know that they used to make a V. Years ago I had an awesome Ibanez "script logo" V that was probably made in the late 70s-early 80s. That thing was so much nicer than my Gibson V that the Ibanez was my main guitar and the Gibson was the backup! I haven't seen any in a really long time though...probably just making their own line these days. If you see an Ibanez V on Ebay or in a store somewhere, snag it up...you'll love it.

Ibanez made Vs in the 70s and 80s both the regular V and the RRV. I once had a Rocket Roll X Series, and I thought it blew chunks all over the place. Nice neck, nice looking guitar, but in reality it was built cheaply. I also had one of their Flying V basses. It was cool too, but a little impractical for a bass................

A friend of mine had an 84-85 model Ibanez RR V rip off. It was metallic pink with black hardware and pickguard. It was a bolt on too. I played the crap out of that thing. Made me feel like Vinny Vincent. LOL! I have seen a few Gibson type Ibanez V's in pawn shops back in San Diego CA. I played one that was actualy set up real nice and I got to plug it into a Marshall half stack (Plexi head I think. All I know is that it was real old and the price was real high). Sounded great. Nice and vintage rock like.

Ibanez made Vs (Gibson, King And Rhoads style) until they got fed up with constantly being sued

I believe Jack Owen from Cannibal Corpse played an Ibanez V in the Staring Through The Eyes Of The Dead video.

I had the same guitar in 1986, it was called a PR1660, and it was awesome. Pink, black hardware, really nice neck and it sounded great. I snapped the neck off when I fell off my motorbike with it strapped to my back(it was in a gig bag).

Re: Ibanez flying v - any such thing?

Ibanez made a V's and Explorers in the late 70s that were very very close to Gibsons. They also made a Moderne clone too. The V was called the Rocket Roll, the Explorer was the Destroyer.

When Ibanez got sued they changed some of the specs and the Rocket Roll II and Destroyer II were born.

The biggest changes were the headstocks and the body on the Destroyer II. Both were offered in quality versions (flamed maple tops) and crappy versions (solid color 2 pickup versions and solid color 1 pickup versions). Even Ibanez admits in their new book that the 1 pickup versions were pretty much junk. The flametop versions usually had block pearl/abalone inlays although some of the early ones had dot inlays. Some of the Destroyers had a 2 piece bridge, others had a wraparound bridge.

The Rocket Roll II underwent a slight body modification in the mid 80s and then was discontinued.

I have a 1982 Rocket Roll II and 1983 Destroyer II. Both are flametops and are really really great playing guitars. When I took them to get setup by a local guy a few years back he was blown away and said he never would have thought Ibanez made such nice guitars.

Some early Rocket Rolls might even have the Greco name on them. What happened was Hoshino in Japan was making guitars then sending them out all over the world. Most of the distributors were allowed to put their own name on the guitars. In Japan, sometimes the Greco name was placed on them. In the US, it was the Ibanez name.

The bolt on and neck thru Rhoads Ibanez guitars were released in the mid 80s. For the most part I hear good things about them.

The 70s guitars sell for around $700 and up on ebay. The 80s flametops sell for around $350-700.

I highly recommend the new Ibanez book if you want to see how the company grew and see all the models they released.

Steve Lukather used to use one back in early 80's.
Also A guy from Offspring uses one in Red.

A local store has one of the Ibanez natural Gibson copy V's. Its really nice, I love the thing, but they want $1100 FIRM for it.
