Re: Question about strat heads.
For Strats anyway, the large headstock started appearing in late '65/'66. They made them up until '82. Then in late '83/'84 the the first US distributed MIJ Squier Strats had the large headstock. After that there were some MIJ '70s as well as a MIJ '68 RI. Later Fender came out with the MIM '70s RI. There is also the Voodoo/'68 Reverse that has a big headstock. There are a few sig. Strats with CBS heads(Yngwie, Hendrix, Trower, etc.), and I think about 2 years ago Fender did a special run of American Vintage Reissue '70s. These are pretty rare and most people don't know they made them, but you will see one from time to time on ebay. Also Fender went to the narrow 12th fret dot spacing you Charvel/Jackson junkies know and love in '63 IIRC. As an FYI, the MIM RIs neck don't feel anything like a real '70s Strat . The MIM '70s RI is a cosmetic RI only.
If you are looking for a real '70s Strat, here is one thing to look for...There are quite a few '83/'84 Squiers (killer guitars in there own right) that have been relogoed as '70s Fenders. Here is two of the things to look out for (among others) on these...
The Fender necks of the time...
Rosewood on the Fender will be a lam board, the Squire will be a Slab board.
The dot Spacing on the Fender will be narrow, The Squire will be like a '50s/ early '60s Fender.
Be carful, I know of a Vintage dealer that took in a rebadged Squire as a '70s Fender. He must have been hungover that day!
