• Gibson SG's

Anyone here into them? I was playing an Angus signature model today, played really nice. Was kind of digging the classic 57 pickup in it.

I did try to do a search for past posts on them, but the new search engine is absolutely awful. Not enough letters to search. Please wait to search again. 1 year is too long to search..Sorry, got off topic.

Anyone like SG's?

Re: Gibson SG\'s

I was a big SG fan when I was really into Tony Iommi. I bought an SG Special back in 92 and have had it ever since. Nice guitar. PLays really fast and sounds great. I kind of always kicked myself for not getting a Standard, but the Special I have has an ebony board, so it has a spankier sound than a Standard, which I find to have a warmer sound.

I've experimented with pickups, JB in the bridge, a set of Gibson ceramic 500T/496R, and settled on a Screamin' Demon bridge and a 59 neck. I get a nice bluesy to hard rock kind of sound out of it.

If you dig them, you can't go far wrong. The 61 RI is nice if you like a more vintage vibe.

The 61 re-issue is exactly what I am looking at. My friend/guitar shop owner has one so I can get it for a song. The Angus was cool, but that lyre vibrato thing was a pain in the arse. Also has a couple of standards. They really did have a cool super crunchy vintage sound to them, must have been the 57's. Hmmm...

Yeah, I don't dig the Lyre trem thing. Its kind of wonky. If you look at the original SGs that came with those trems, most have been converted into regular tune-o-matics. That should tell you something.

I'm more of a fan of the 24 fret SG-X, SG-Z, and USA-1 models, with the single hum or the H/S setup, but i know if I ever get one, I'm either going to load it with a Gibson Iommi humbucker or EMG 81 in the bridge and a really hot SC in the neck (for those models with a neck SC)...

I love SGs! I'd love to own one of the faded Specials...I think the necks are great and I like how that finish feels.

I have an SG Supreme that's well balanced, 24 fret ebony neck, and growls like dowg knawing on a bone. The standard colors are midnight blue, emerald green, and fireburst. I was able to score a lavaburst finish and pictures just don't do it justice. It is gorgeous. Is it apparent I like SGs?

I've had a couple of 70's Standards (Cherry Red 76 and a 74 NaturalBurst) and while I loved them I thought they were too small, too light, and neck heavy.
If I could find one that was as thick as an LP or LP Jr with blocks, binding, and rosewood.....

I really like the look and feel of the SG supremes. Midnight blue and fireburst are great colors on them. I saw one a long time ago at a Guitar center (I was slumming) with triple pickups but they wanted too much so I passed.

My fav of all the Gibsons. Had one in Cherry Red with the big tremelo thing. Don't know what year it was. Bought it in like 1976.

Great necks, as people have said they play very fast.

Great sound as far as I remember but I don't have one to compare the sound head to head with my other guitars right now.

You will like the neck on them.

Super goods as a buddy of mine always joked.
My first decent guitar was a '74 SG in walnut. The nut width of the old ones seems narrow.

Then I bought a '64 which was a converted lyre. The nut width and the neck in general was a lot wider and the radius seemed flatter. Both those guitars were great axes, especially the '64 which had a nice bite top end.
I played the '74 to death as well. It was my main stage guitar for most of my younger days.

I wish I never sold them.

Very cool guitars if you like the shape. Light and handy with good tone IMHO. Its the only guitar that I was really into that I never got around to owning (I was a big angus fan once upon a time). I still check 'em out when I see one in a store.

Very cool Mark, I do like the look of the supremes...I think I will go pickup one of the 61's or Standards today.
