• New Ibanez Zero Resistance tremolos...

who's seen these? They only come on the new S-series guitars and i like the new Drop tuning feature in it, includes the trem stabilizing system too...

http://www.ibanez.com/parts/2004_PA.../2ZRT1RNK2.html

I just wish it was available individually or on an RG series guitar...or on any Jackson or Charvel fitted for a Floyd Rose...

EDIT (to elaborate): it operates on a ballbearing system instead of the usual knife edge system associated with the Floyd Rose, and with the drop tuning system, it'll keep the other strings from going out out tune when going back and forth between standard and dropped tunings, a much better designed and engineered system than the EVH D-Tuna with a Tremsetter stabilizer for a regular FR...

Well, they're not that new, been around for awhile from what I can remember. That is the ONLY Ibanez trem I like. It's smooth as hell and goes back to zero pretty quick. Very stable, if I weren't using a floyd I'd probably be using that, but I'm not much of an Ibanez fan. I need something to grab on to while I'm playing, and there's not enough neck on it for me to feel comfortable. But, that trem system is great I think.

I agree, limiting it to just the S series is a bit counter-productive...seems you need the hands of a frog to play that thing comfortably...

Yeah, I like their trems, just really don't care for the thin Wizard profile necks. The Wizard II is supposed to be a little thicker, but I don't think I've ever played one of those.

the ultra's are even thicker i think plus the ultra's are standard on neck through body guitars - imho ultras are fine ( definitely better for my big hands than a wizard)

Wow I have not seen these comments on thin necks so often here.

I totally agree with these assessments.

I now have a PC1 with what most people would call a meaty neck and I love it. Does not interfere with speed at all and is superb for clarity, articulation and vibrato.

I had a JEM six string. Fast neck but too thin and the trem sucked. Very cheap feel to the guitar and not much in tone unless highly processed.

this thread not about the necks, people (although i agree about them, too thin in every direction), it's about the new ZR trems v(and NOT the Edge trems), now back to the subject at hand...damn, sorry about the link screwup...

Cool. I'll have to check out an ultra some day. My hands are actually a little on the smaller side, but I prefer having a rounder, thicker neck profile... it just feels more comfortable to me nowadays. Gibson '59 neck profiles are great!

Well when I saw this thread it caught my attention so I clicked Rons links (Thanks Ron ) started looking around went by GC today to play an S series Hit my Sam ash store also. I hate to say this but I'm impressed at the trem & the playability of the S Series guitar. I've never been an Ibanez fan, but it seems I have one on the way & GC is going to find me a S470DXQM for me in the Blue quilt top.
I some how feel dirty about this like falling from grace, but I know if some came near my Jacksons there would be Blood & intrails on the walls.

Damn it I want one too now I stopped by my local music store today and they had the 470DXQM in blue also. These new Ibanez finishes look really nice in person, all of em, even that glittery lookin blue and red looks kinda cool.

Re: New Ibanez Zero Resistance tremolos...

Couple of things...

1) Steinberger used ball bearings in the transtrems, not sure about their 'R' and 'S' trems. It's a great idea for the most part...

2) EXCEPT they wear out quickly, since the ball bearing is only used in an arc. Estimates are around 1-2 years in the transtrem, then they don't return to zero correctly and need to be replaced.

3) For the TransTrems, the Steinberger folk have specified a replacement sealed ball bearing that should last much much longer - from what I've heard, the guys that have replaced them haven't had to do it twice. These parts aren't that expensive either, which is a real head scratcher as to why Ibanez isn't using sealed bearings.

Pete

They'll probably introduce sealed bearings as the "improved" version when the original ones start wearing out...

either way, i am liking them a lot more than the standard Floyd Rose and it's renditions, but i am dismayed at their limited availability, and that it's only available on S-series guitars...I'd like to find just the ZR trems, actually, and replace the FR trems on my Soloist and Model 6...
