• Music Yo Kramer Special (SG clone) review

Well I've been fiending for an SG since I let go of my Gibby. There's been a thousand times I've wanted to buy it back but alas the fundage just hasn't been there recently to make an appropriate offer. Enter Music Yo.
Thus month they ran a special on the Special $100 off made it $249 plus $16 shipping, eh what the hell right? Ordered a black one, it was waiting for me today stashed behind my trash cans so you couldn't see it from the street. +1 FedEx guy!

Well I have to say this thing is really nice! Like shockingly nice!

-----
The good,
Wonderful fret job, nicely polished and level, no snags, tangs, frets out of wack etc.

The neck, a bit on the beefy side but I dig it. Nicely finished as I said above no snags etc... Inlays are well done and look like genuine abalone. Dark rosewood board not orange like I've seen a few times.

Perfect intonation right from the box, I've only bought a few new guitars and none of them were ever right. Also the nut is slotted and installed perfectly.

Hardware, grover machine heads stay in tune without problems, knobs, switch, strap buttons bridge and tail piece seem top notch no plastic here. All the pots have a nice smooth slow feel that I like.

Pickups I'll give a good I prefer EMG's but these are quite nice supposedly made in the USA by Gibson. Good sustain, nice drive pretty articulate, no wierd noises, very quiet when not playing. Wiring is done nicely too, the control cavity is even shielded.

Packed really well, shipped from Tenessee. Came with a cable and allen wrench for the truss rod.

-----
The not so good but not bad enough to get a bad.
The paint, there is a run in the upper cutout where you would rest your thumb when playing very high up. Other than that it looks great.

The action, a bit high for my taste but nothing outrageous, 1/8 to 3/16's at the 12th fret.

Overall impression, really nice, plays real well, sounds good a bit on the dark side. Neck is on the beefy side, inlays are minimal and done very well. Much better job than on many LTDs I've tried. The neck is deeply set in the body and the cutouts seem deeped than a geniune SG, playing up high is very comfy. Money well spent I will be getting another or possibly a Custom in the future.

I've looked at some of the Musicyo Kramer stuff, and very seriously considered buying. It's nice to hear that you get so much for your money. Now if they would just make a set-neck explorer.

Mmmm, just looked at the site, and the V and Exp shaped guitars are gone. What's up with that?

Anything that's out of stock they take off the site. If you email them, they'll usually give you an approximate date when they'll have them back in stock.

They look to be made by LTD/ESP. They manufacture some pretty decent quality stuff for the money.
Seems the fretwork is a higher quality than a Korean Epi.

i'm guessing they're LTD's too this axe looks just like a Viper. the fretwork is really great(far better than any LTD i've had), i wish i could show it to you. one thing i thing i forgot to mention. the fingerboard still had some polishing compound residue on it.
i read some chatter on a message board that Kramer is currently setting up a much larger US shop to meet demand for their guitars.
I hope they produce a reverse headstock sometime, that would be good lynch bengal/kamikaze fodder

They're made alongside the import ESP/LTDs and Schecters in the Korean Samick factory, I am told. I was almost going to buy one of their Les Paul style guitars a few months ago when I had Les Paul GAS.

Congrats, they seem like fantastic guitars for the insanely low price.

I figured the Schecters and LTDs were made together, because my Schecter's neck (except for the headstock) is identical to my friend's LTD, although the fit and finish and setup on my Schecter is nicer than any LTD I've played.

lol, seems like everything in the Korean Samick company is nicer than the LTDs!

Depends on the LTD, they have gotten into the 'lets make it cheaper' zone over the last four-five years.
