  • Need some assistance with budget axe purchase....

I am wanting a hard tail and narrowed down to these two.

Schecter Omen 6 or an Ibanez RG321.

I also am considering the Karmer Baretta from musicyo, but I have no experience with the D-TUNA floyd.

Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    X

if you don't like the d-tuna, you can just remove it and put in a normal floyd lockdown screw.

personally, of those three i'd get the ibanez.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

The $299 Omen 6 has basswood body and no neck binding, the $272.49 (musicians friend) RG321 has mahogany body and neck binding, so the Ibanez would probably be the better one. You can always change pickups if you didn't like the stock Ibanez ones, and with a mahogany body to work with you'll get some good tones.

The $329 Kramer: FYI, for the D-tuna to work, the floyd is 'blocked' against the body, so in essence it will feel like a hardtail (you can only dive down, you can't pull up). I have the D-tunas on my Wolfgangs and after you play around setting it up it works ok (and like Hippietim says, you can remove it and put a normal lock screw there and then set the floyd up to float). Also if I recall correctly, I don't think too many people like the pickups on these.

Thanks for the input guys! I think I am going to go see if guitar center has the RG and play it a bit.

I'd take the Ibanez, although keep in mind that the Walnut Satin finished Schecter is actually a Mohogany body, not basswood. I asked a Schecter rep once about this, as I was quite confused how basswood had the kind of grain I was seeing.

Definetely try them both. I was suprised that the vote wasn't equally split here. I like the sound of a cheap Shecter a lot more than an Ibanez. I just can't quite come to grips with Ibanez. They play nicely, but the sound just isn't what I'm looking for. Cheap Shecters are actually not too bad.

              Just my opinion. HTH

3 weeks ago I bought a PRS SE Soapbar II. I have to tell you, it is one of the best guitars I have ever owned, period. if you can deal with a chunky neck, you can find some dealers (Chuck Levins) that will sell you a new one for $399. That is one low price for such a killer guitar, plus it comes with one of the nicest gig bags ever...

Hey guys thanks for all the great advice. I tried both the guitars out and I have gone with the Schecter. It was close. They both played relatively well, but I liked the neck on the Schecter just a tad bit more. If I had the money I woulda bought both and used the RG for alternate tunings.

                      Thanks again!

Thebisch is right! A tobacco burst PRS Soapbar SE II is most likely gonna be my next guitar.

Boxcar, do it! I am loving mine and haven't wanted to touch any of my Strats since I got mine, and I'm a Strat guy who's #1 is a old '79! I have the burst, and with the cream pickups, gold knobs and switch tip, it looks absolutly awesome.

As an aside, I have never been a fan of PRS guitars for some reason. i always knew they were high quality, but they never appealed to me until I saw this SBII. Since getting the SBII I have been sorta jonesing for a "real" PRS. Since getting the SBII, I have played about 4 or 5 McCartys, and I have to say that I can't really see or feel how they are any better the the SBII, really! The SBII is that good IMO.

I've had a Santana SE since last summer...it's my main guitar. I got into P90s around Christmastime and got a Gibson Melody Maker to that accord. The Soapbar II seems like a cool amalgam of the two.
