  • McNaught Guitars

I've been looking these lately - the bolt on specifically.

I guess there is something different about how they carve and shape the necks.

They put Rio Grande pickups on the things and body mount them.

Wood on the particular model is mohagony w/maple top which I like.

Wondering if they would be a good shred guitar.

People seem to like them over Suhrs or Andersons from what I have read and you can get 24 frets on them.

Dave's stock setup blows away everything on earth for shred. The majority of players ask to have the action raised on buying a DTM. It's ultra-low, fast, and without buzz.

I have to agree about the setup. I just sold the Phoenix below and the guitar was perfect from day one and it never moved during seasonal temp changes. Low action was never a problem. 24 frets were great. The neck had 2 carbon bars in it to make it stable. Mine was all korina with the set-thru neck. I sold it for 2 reasons: 1. too much of a museum piece. I was always worried about playing it and 2. I wasn't thrilled with how it sounded. Although I am sure with some work I could have made improvements in sound.

Yeah I was wondering about that - the market out there for these high end guitars seems to be geared towards the vintage guys - 22 frets, vintage sound for blues or 70/s rock.

It seems like Anderson, Suhr, McNaught etc.. are not set up to sound aggressive like your ESP's, Jacksons, Hamers.

The McNaughts come with these Rio Grande pickups - which is another thing. Electronics are geared to the vintage crowd also perhaps.

I have played Tom Andersons before and they were nowhere near sounding as good as my PC1 for what I play.

Call/email Dave and talk to him. Since many of his orders are custom-built, you should be able to get whatever pickups you want. I'm not a big fan of Rio Grande, either, but for a different reason.

            I was actually thinking of the G4 - I like a superstrat.

However, his guitars are extremely expensive.

If I could find a used one with 24 frets I would probably scoop it up.

There is one on ebay and the only reason I am not bidding on it is because it only has 22 frets.

I like how he sets the neck way into the body so the pickups and the bridge are all actually on top of the piece of wood that makes up the neck. Interesting idea for sure.

I was just talking to Scott Splawn over at Splawn amplification. He is getting in some Mcnaught strat style guitars. They look very nice but are pricey. Give him a call if you want a 22 fret Floyded strat style guitar. You will also find out a nice suprise about them also. Paul

I appreciate the info but I really am looking for a 24 fret beast.

IMO the workmanship of a McNaught is great and all but it still does not justify the price. There are plenty of well made guitars out there for half as much. Just my .02

Hey Shredmonster, im sure he will build you a 24 fretter. Go to www.splawnamplification.com Theres not much on his website about them. If you call Scott he can give you all the info on them. I know they are about $1600 and up.

He makes some that are <$3k. Nobody orders them, though. People want the uber-pricey, super-decked-out jobs, so that's what you see 99% of the time.

I have checked out Splawn guitars once in the past.

They had this super cool guitar called a Hybrid.

Most awsome looking guitar I have ever seen looks wise.

I think Scott was in Europe and emailed me about it.

But I didn't get good answers to some of my questions regarding tone and sustain and they said at the time he was building mostly bases. So I let it go.

the G4 bolt strat is no longer on his revised site, only the set neck G5 strat style
