Re: Who makes an SG type guitar?

Those Yamahas and Ibanez Artists are closer to a double-cut Les Paul than an SG really. Hey Travis, out of curiousity, why do you want an SG that isn't a Gibson?

Re: Who makes an SG type guitar?

I've always liked the SG style. But with all the horror stories I've heard about Gibson's quality control, I didn't really want to put the effort into finding a really good one. Plus, I don't really like paying for the Gibson name.

I think I'll be getting some sort of V next, though. But I'm always looking into the future.

Come to Charlotte and buy one from me and you won't be paying for the Gibson name Seriously though, most of the SGs I've sold (a lot, kids love them) are pretty good, without a lot of the QC issues. Other than a kid locking one in his case and not being able to get it out, I've never had one returned on me. The Faded series Specials are a great value for the money, and you could always check out some used ones as well.

Actually, I did that once. I hadn't played my LP in so long that I forgot the combination to the lock, so my drummer figured out that if you hold the button to the side (like you were trying to open it) and spin each number, you'd feel each one click into place.

ESP makes the viper..and its sort of an offset. I've never played one myself. The agile one seems ok, but I'm not too crazy about what they did with the horns. They are too short or something.

Yes, Gibson has had sone QC problems, but so has all manufacturers. If you don't want to pay for the Gibson name, that's one thing. But to overlook their nice instruments is just shooting yourself in the foot.

Re: Who makes an SG type guitar?

If I can find a nice Gibson SG for the right price, then I'm not going to turn my nose up at it. But I'm also not going to overpay by a couple of hundred just because of the name on the headstock. If I come across the right one at the right time, then I'll snag it. I was just never a fan of the Faded Specials or the Gothic SGs. I much prefer a Standard.

Re: Who makes an SG type guitar?

Probably not what you are looking for, but over in England, John Birch Guitars makes a killer SG-shaped guitar. It's all-maple neckthru, with the slightly deeper/sharper horns that '70s Gibson SGs had. The Birch SG is what Tony Iommi played throughout the late '70s-mid '80s. In fact, he's hinted that he still records with them, even though you only see him onstage now with Gibsons.

The Birches are very expensive, though--probably a lot more so than a Gibby. But I've never read a bad thing about them. And you can even get them with the full-on Iommi treatment: cross inlays, steel pickguard, etc.

A used gibby sg standard really isn't that expensive either. If you don't desire a new one, that could always be an option. I sold my old one for around $700 - it was in pretty good shape too.

Jason Lollar, the pickup guy, makes some that are supposed to be killer: http://lollarguitars.com/

The ESP Japan SGs are sweet, too (if you can find one): http://www.espguitars.co.jp/navigato...nsg300ltd.html

Yep, ESP Japanese Viper all the way, the quality is awsome and they come with EMG`s!! Rondo has ruined all of their models, due to being afraid of Gibson. Jack.
