• McNaught - a closer look ;)

For the past couple of months, I've had a craving for another guitar. I've been all over the map with what I wanted...started out looking at the new Charvels, then Suhrs, and most recently looked at building a Warmoth to save a few bucks. Mainly, I wanted a versatile guitar with a nice range of usable sounds.

Well, thanks to Shredmonster's McNaught thread and based on a lot of frenzied last second research, I pulled the trigger on this:

To some extent, it was a crap shoot. I was able to play another G-4 locally, which convinced me that I liked McNaught's neck carve and wasn't bothered by the heel construction. Out of a dozens of photos on many web sites, though, I didn't find another McNaught ANYWHERE that had been built with a Floyd.

I'm happy to report that this guitar is incredible. Every position on the five-way has an articulate, full sound. After lowering the action a bit, the guitar plays as well as anything I have (including my parts Charvel). The reptile finish is hard to photograph. For some reason, the guitar just looks green in photos. In person it looks much cooler, but I don't know how to describe the effect.

Thanks to everyone who pointed me in this direction. I'm going to enjoy this one quite a bit!

Awsome, and from what I can tell, based on other eBay prices, you got a sweet deal on that one.

You are not wrong. List was $5450. I shouldn't have been able to afford it used!

I'm diggin' it. Very cool, and I don't usually like quilt top strats. Any pics of the back?

I was so close to bidding on that! It was for sure a steal and I knew it.

The only I didn't was because there are 22 frets instead of 24 but am still wondering if I would have like it anyway.

How does it play compared to bolt on Charvels?

Wondering on the neck profile - can you get up to the top frets? Is it a compound radius?

I hear good things about the neck on those.

The neck profile is completely different from my parts Chavel. It's chunky, but doesn't feel big. It's unusal in that it is slightly asymetrical, with the treble side being a tiny bit slimmer. I'm not positive, but I believe that it has the same 12" radius as my Charvel neck. I usually prefer thinner necks, but this one is an exception. Even though it's very different, it PLAYS more like the Charvel neck than any other guitar I have.

I don't know if you'd be happy with the neck joint. I have pretty bad technique and long fingers. I've found that I can play better on the upper frets with bolt-ons because I have something to grab onto with my thumb. I seem to need the additional anchor where the frets are really close together. If you have consistent technique up and down the whole board, you will probably be annoyed by the heel.

As much as I love this guitar, I don't think it would have been worth the $3000+ it would have cost new. It is definitely worth every penny I paid for it, though.

That is a stunner. I love green. It looks worth every penny of how much it cost.

Very sweet! I presume the pickups are Duncans? Awesome top on this one.
