• Reliced Fender Custom shops - not my bag baby...

A little while ago I had my first ever look at a Custom Shop Fender Strat that was aged/reliced from the factory. I could not beleive how crap it looked as they had done all the relicing and then fully clearcoated over them all!!!! What the hell is the point of that?

These guys love to clear over everything, they probably wish they could just dip the whole guitar in clear so none of it will get too dirty or tarnished. Sheesh....

This is of course coming from a guy who loves oiled necks, so the practice of clearing the back of a neck, and even worse, the front, is a bad thing.

Are all reliced Fenders like this?

Lol. That's hilarious if it's true. You know, because you wouldn't want to get any schmutz on your fake dirt.

I don't know, I think fake relicing is stupid, unless its a amazing job.

All the Fender relics I've seen were like that.

Shawn just had one of his up for sale. I wonder if they're all like that.

The only Relic Strat i've liked is the Rory Gallagher Strat. It really looks the business, very nice relic.

I prefer the relic Gibsons done by Tom Murphy. The LP's and Explorers and V's...now THAT is traveling back in time!!

I especially love finish checking....the heavier the better!
Gibson doesn't clear over their relics! Finish nicks and dings are DOWN TO THE BARE WOOD....He even gets them to SMELL old!!!!!! Nothing like the smell of aged Mahogany or Korina!! (brings a tear of joy to my eye...sniff)

from an artistic standpoint, i like the relic process. i think taking something new, and methodically making it look old is, well, pretty cool. they don't just take the guitar and drag it behind a car on their smoke breaks... but smoke breaks (from what i'd been told by a fender rep) are how the guitars get cigarette burns. clearing over a relic job is silly, though.

Two things. I don't think Shawn's guitar was a relic, but a reissue. Second, I don't mind aging parts (Gibson uses this process), but I damn sure don't want to pay out the ass for a guitar that's been chipped and dinged with a ball pin hammer.

And there's always the after gig conversation when someone says "ah cool, a '56 Strat" and you spend the next few minutes wiping the egg off your face after admitting it's a 2001 Relic.

I cannot appreciate what it takes to "relic" a guitar, because it will always look like some four year old was unleashed on it with daddy's tool set. What a stupid, dumb, lame, idiotic, moronic idea, and I laugh at the people that pay for this. Why not just buy a guitar and beat it up yourself?

Re: Reliced Fender Custom shops - not my bag baby.

I don't mind the idea of a brand new guitar looking like it's had the arse played off of it. Y'know, wear around the volume knob; finish worn down (but not completely gone) on the back of the neck; aged parts; paint worn away on the body contours; maybe the odd ding or knock. But some of the relics I've seen have looked like they've been flatout abused. Not so much like they've been played hard, but more like they've not been looked after. Which is not a cool look for me.

And the whole clear coating over the relicing? That's a crack-up! We've beat your guitar to a certain point, but we don't want it to wear anymore from there. I thought the whole point was to fast forward the aging process - now when YOU play it, you'll be continuing the process, adding your own bumps, dings & wear. Not that you'd have to work down through a layer of clear to get to the already worn paintwork.

Its to the point that its near impossible to find a good strat that has not been relic'd.

No one to blame but consumers. There is some guy out there that has a mint, still new in the box, used to be his grandads, not a chip on it, has not been outta its case in 40 years, 58 telecaster that he's gonna take a hammer and some sand paper to to make it "look" old.

Or maybe its all Newc's fault.

Nah...that's when Newc would see the same '58 Tele, decide that it's too banged up, and hit it with a can of Krylon!

I don't care much for the relics either. It looks kinda cool on an old guitar that's seen a lot of use and been "relic'd" the natural way, but I don't get the whole making a new guitar look old thing at all.
Just play the crap out of your guitar, wear a lot of gold braclets like Yngwie, bang it around a little, flip it over your shoulders, smack it into stuff, other band members, maybe drop it once in awhile, too.
