No offense ment to anyone, but a custom-shop, over-priced, reliced out version of what was originally an economy guitar is a concept that is just funny to me.

Is it any more silly than a 4k Custom Shop Charvel or jackson, that is twice the money of the strat, and you cant sell for half the money a day later?

No offense taken, it is a bit silly, but what isn't overpriced? I paid $1699 for it, essentially new. How much for a San Dimas Re-issue (theres that word again)? $1599, for a one hum guitar? The CS 54 pickups in it sound luscious and thick and plays like a dream. As a matter of fact, last nite I decided I couldnt sell it, so pulled it off for sale sites.

Once again, its all about value to you, the owner.It's got an awesome fat neck, and sounds so chimey but thick at the same time, its like molasses. This isn't a shot, believe me, but I think that the Collen Archtops (like the one in your pic) are the ugliest things Jackson ever made, including the Jazz'r. I wouldnt pay $500 for one, unless I could turn it. But, once again, there are people who would walk over their own mother to get one.

When I used to think that the world rotated around Pre-CBS Strats (late '80s, early 90s)I would look for examples that were in good condition. You could always score a re-fin for much cheaper than an original. I bought a stone gorgeous blonde '63 refin in '91 for $1800. Nothing I have ever owned played like that guitar. I let Tab Benoit play it on stage one night (he grew up with a friend of mine, a great guy too) and he almost wouldn't give it back. I sold that guitar to Gill Southworth and I won't even tell you how badly Gill raped me on that....but I digress. I used to like them clean. I stripped and refinished a '71 Strat because the original black finish was too "relic'd" for my taste, and hell it was a '71..they were worth $700 when I bought it! Hah, I wish I still had that guitar! That one I traded for an original silverburst Les Paul which usually fetch $3500 on E-bay now, but in '90 it was an "ugly" 80's Les Paul...which I traded, along with a Jap '57 reissue strat for a '65 Tele mongrel.....ah, the days. Back to the point. Now, I like the relics...if they are done right. If it has a maple neck, it better have wear grooves and dirt. If it looks like it has been played hard for 45 years legitimately, I am down with it.

Shawn, the good stuff you say about the guitar has nothing to do with whether or not they beat it up for you. Personally, I don't like fake relic jobs because I think it's silly. I'd rather wear it out myself.

Having said that, I totally agree about the Fender Custom Shop Time Machine series. I had one of the Closet Classic Strats (it only took a mild beating) that I got at a GC blowout for $999 and it was brilliant. It played and sounded absolutely fantastic. I'd like that and my custom shop double bound Tele back.

Does John Page build guitars?
I thought he was only signing these certificates for all the custom shop guitars.
I at least had 3 custom shop guitars(regular catalog models like NOS, Relic models) and all had John Page signed on the certificates.

Also when it is a masterbuild guitar, back of the headstcok, there is a decal with builder's name.
Those are the real expensive ones.
Normal Custom shop models are made by some people working for the custom shop and not built by one builder.
These models only have Custom Shop decals instdead of builder's name decals.

Actually, I fill my pool with clearcoat. It helps preserve my tan and keeps my hair shiny.

Anyone that buys a custom shop instrument from Jackson, ought to be buying it because they know exactly what they want, not because they plan to resell it. I don't think there are any illusions as to resale value, but you are getting an instrument the absolutely smokes. Also, it is worthy to note that I am not a Charvel guy, and will never understand why someone will pay that much for a bolt-on neck guitar. Especially the EVH with basswood bodies. Sure, I love Eddie, too, but they're just not that nice of a guitar for the money.

As you said, none taken. I used to think they were silly looking, too, until I played one. The balance and upper fret access is absolutely perfect. It is a guitar that just looks goofy on a stand by itself, and is very much a form follows function instrument.

I'm taking it that the custom shop Strats are based off the best of the best. I've played some Strats that are the absolute holy grails of tone. For every one of them, there are 99 pieces of crap. It was an economy guitar, and I will still always laugh at Fender for making such a big deal (and price) over a "faithful reproduction" of an economy guitar.

You don't see car manufacturers reproducing economy guitars of yester year. You're not going to find the faithfully restored '76 Honda Civic. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
