• The Future of GMW

Hey there everybody, recently, I spent some time at GMW and thought I’d let you all know what is going on in the shop. Let me tell you all right now, there is a great deal to look forward to.

As it stands, the first twenty or so guitars in production have already been predetermined as to what they will be. Basically, the idea is to separate the guitars into contemporary and vintage categories.

The goal behind the contemporary guitars is to create a look which is undeniably and uniquely GMW. The finishes will follow in this same vein, and though they will have obvious roots in Charvel/Jackson history, you will look at them and think “GMW” not “Charvel.” In conjunction with these new finishes, are a few very unique inlay designs, which will match or add to the finish.

As you might have guessed, the vintage guitars are going to be pretty much vintage Charvel with a bit of a GMW twist. Expect things like vintage hot rod flames and other Charvel classics, as well as all the other classics from J/C history.

Regarding the new headstocks, there are two new designs, one is more contemporary/aggressive/pointy, while the other is a classic S-type headstock. The neck profiles are all still the same, so no need to worry about that. From my understanding, they will be made public as soon as they are available. So far, I’ve seen a bunch of parts of these guitars-to-be, and GMW definitely has a lot going for it.

Walking into the shop right now is like a dream for anybody with any interest in luthiery, or guitars in general. I’ve never even seen some of the exotic figured woods Lee has. Everything from flamed redwood (wow) to 5A quilt and flame maple, plus 5A flame walnut and many sets of unique spalted maple lam tops. And the best part is that they are all available for GMW bodies and necks. I’ve seen some of the bodies that are ready to go and the tops are unbelievable. We are talking things 5A maple bodies with flame redwood laminate tops. Truly very cool stuff.

All new guitars will be serialized and recorded, and better yet, posted in full on the GMW site. This will eliminate problems with counterfeit guitars, and swapped out parts. The potential buyer will be able to simply surf on over to the GMW site and see exactly how the guitar left the shop.

The best thing about it all though, is that GMW is still the GMW we all love. In the end, despite the production lines, you can still pretty much order whatever you want, at the same great price.

Just thought you all would like to know!

What type of feature? I would think a headstock would be pretty cut and dry...
          Sounds interesting

the deal maker or breaker for me will be the headstock. I'm sure it's going to be nice. Lee knows what people want to see

All nice. But getting around to my guitar that has been on order now for over 2 fukking years would be nice. He's had it sitting around waiting for paint since November.

                  Re: The Future of GMW

So I am curious. Are the GMW necks and fret jobs just as good as Jackson's?

                  I would assume they are.

I am thinking of just calling either Jackson or GMW and let them build me a sustain machine by letting them pick out the features that from their experience that will result in a guitar with the most sustain possible.

I'm not sure who does Jacksons, but GMW's are just fantastic in my opinion. I have a friend who took his $500 parts fender strat in for a refret, and when he got it back, he was jumping around like a madman, saying it was just like getting a new custom shop Fender. GMW fretjobs are done at Moser Custom Shop. One of the best, if not THE best in the business.

I think the GMW guitars are tremendous. You buy a $2400 Charvel or Jackson and you still have to spend $150 to get it set up right...neck tweak...polish and grind. You spend $1200 on a GMW to your specs and it's set right for real from out of the case. I own three GMW's with a 4th on the way. I have about 20 Charvel and Jackson USA guitars.

GMW fretjobs are not done at the Moser Custom Shop. The MCS simply dresses frets for GMW, they don't install them.

The fourth post in this thread. That is where I am coming from and the countless other times Neal mentioned this. I wouldn't know the exatc detail that is done to guitars at MCS but I know for a fact that a good deal of work that makes GMW guitars so good is made at MCS.

Same with MCS guitars a great deal of work(all paint and graphics stuff) is done at GMW. If one of them didn't exist the other wouldn't be this good.
