• Opinions Please on this sale.

Some of you might remember how a few weeks ago I sold off a couple of guitars. Well some guy from New York(off the gear page forums) wanted my PRS ME(about 1 month old). We talked and we agree upon a price of $4000 which for this guitar I thought was a hell of a price. I actually got alot of request for this one. Anyways he ask can he send me a personal check, I wanted a wire transfer but he didn't want to spend the $30 bucks( I should have known then I was dealing with a miser). I tell him alright but it will have to clear 1st(about 15 days). He send the check normal mail so about 6 days later I get it. At 1st I went to just cash it at citibank, but they give me this story that citibank is broken up into districts and 1 district doesn't have access to anothers records(whatever Wells Fargo is WellsFargo no matter where you go) So I email him the bank deposit stating that funds will not clear till the 12th no problem. Then he emails me a few days later a fax showing that the funds have been withdrawen from his account and can I send the guitar. Well I was in Vegas last week so I wasn't able to. So finally yesterday I send the guitar FedEx overnight(as a good faith gesture) the guitar weighs 30+ puonds, cost me over $105 to send. So all moning I keep checking the tracking #'s then about 15 minutes ago I get a email stating

    "Hi Vincent,

The guitar and case have issues. My next e-mail will contain the
    photos."

At this point I'm thinking OH FUCK it got trashed. About 2 minutes later I get a phone call from him, asking if I got the pics yet? I tell him I see that they are in my mailbox but they are a large file and it will take about a minute to get them. So I ask whats wrong(expecting broke in half news). he tells me the case and bridge have issues. I ask wahat, "the case is ripped up" and the bridge is"dented and has tarnish issues". I'm thinking what? Doesn't he know the bridge is supposed to look like that, and also there are dings in the guitar. Anyways here are the pics he sent me.

So I'm looking at these while he is on the phone with me, and I'm thinking and the problem is? He then states that how do we rectify this. So I tell him, look I'm sorry about the case, that's how I got it. I didn't think that these little scuff marks were a deal breaker on this, the case is suede and delicate. As for the Dings in the back of the guitar, I never saw them, they are the dots in the light of the back of the guitar(again sorry). as for the bridge screw(which he descibed as stripped) dam guess I did that when I lowered it a little. I always try to be extremely honest in all my guitar/whatever sales. I am kinda shocked because I gave this guitar to him for a dam good price, was more than gernerous with his payment, and even sent the thing to him overnight(on my dime). So I tell him look if your not happy send it back and I'll refund you, he says let me call you back. 2 minutes later he says I'm gonna send it back, will you split the shipping with me. I told him that I couldn't do that, that I had already spent too much time and money on this deal(I'm kinda pissed at this point). And I tell him "i'm not being rude here, but this is exremely nit picky stuff, If you look at anyguitar hard enough with a magnifying glass you will find problems/blemishes. Am I out of line here? I have never had this happen before. I mean this guy almost got $1000 off a new $8000 MSRP PRS. and he's gonna send it back for a screw(that's replacable and cost less than $50). As for the case I would have never even factored that in, he tells me he "can live with the dings". But the case and screw are the deal breakers. Oh well should have it back in a few days and then I'll send him his money back.
Come and get one in the yarbles, if you have any yarbles, you yunick jelly thou!

+2 sounds like buyer's remorse. Don't refund the money until you have the guitar in hand and have inspected it and make it clear that you'll be deducting your shipping costs from the refund.

So I'm not being a hard ass about his complaints? Here are the last 3 pictures he sent me. I could offer to order him a new screw, but I don't know.

From the pics and whatnot, sounds like the guy is either extremely nitpicky or has gotten a case of buyer's remorse. I can kind of understand the bridge screw objection, but the other "flaws" should be non-issues. At best, though, the screw looks like a cosmetic flaw - not affecting it's function.

You did the right thing in offering a full refund if he returns the guitar. More than likely, you're better off just finding a new buyer.

Suggesting that you split the return shipping is on the margin. Some folks think this should happen standard for a return, but IMHO it's only acceptable if there are significant flaws. Given what you've shown, I wouldn't be inclined. Maybe offer him the $50 for the bridge screw, though? I doubt he'd settle for it, but you never know.

Either way, the guy's a choad.

IMHO the proper question is whether those very very minor issues are worth the $1000+ the buyer saved by picking up yours rather than a new one from a dealer. IMHO you shot him one Hell of a deal and he's missed a very good opportunity to STFU. Photographs, particularly flash photographs as those appear to be, tend to greatly magnify minor imperfections. No doubt there are a couple of minor imperfection but you more than accounted for them in the price IMHO and they're so minor that most folks wouldn't notice them when listing the item for sale. Your buyer is clearly unreasonable.

Alright I just talked to him again on the phone and asked him, Are the tiny cosmetic issues something he can't live with. He told me the case was unnacceptable to him. It seems the case is the issue. I offered to order him a new screw(he wants a new bridge. go figure), but still the case is the problem. The I asked him point blank, is it buyers remorse. he says no. I should have it back by Thursday at the latest, I will inspect it and put it back up for sale, or maybe keep it. Who knows. If interested pass me a pm I'll knock $200 off for the community($3800).

I would have told him to shove the guitar up his ass. That is absurd, and I am an attorney. You have gone well beyond the reasonable on this. A case is designed to PROTECT a guitar from damage. As a result, they get damaged.

I wouldn't even have offered a refund, unless you specifically gave him an inspection privilege.

Sounds like buyer's remorse to me. The wife probably stuck her foot in his ass when she found out how much he spent.

However, playing devil's advocate, if, and only IF you used the word "mint" in your description, he does have a right to moan a little bit.

Here is the post from the gear page sale forum.

"1st time putting something up for sale here. I have a PRS Modern Eagle bought new from Dealer on 3/15. Guitar is little over a month old. It has been in it's case the whole time, except the day I got it, and for the pictures here. Guitar is in New Condition. Comes with all papers, case goodies, everything. If you are looking, I'll assume you know all the specs. Price is $4000 shipped within the CONUS. For this piece I would prefer Bank Wire, or if you live in the L.A. area cash. I can take other forms of payment. Money Order, PayPal Verified(just prefer not to deal with fees for this item). You can check out my Ebay feedback gmarc25, am also a member on the JCF Forums. Pics here are just for quick viewing. If you have any questions or would like additional pictures. Feel free to contact me"

Well, judging from the description. If you included pics and notified him in your later correspondence about the screws, then he's moaning without cause.

But if not, I can see some grounds for complaint (it's not 100% new condition), but in any case, the guy is obviously a serious moaning little tiddy with buyer's remorse.
