• Musikraft neck evalutaion

I ordered a Musikraft neck to see how they compared to others. The first thing I see is that the back of the headstock where the nut is, is kinda like a Kramer , I think.

The backshape is close to my GMW's, maybe a little less meaty on the sides, but it still feels very nice.

The frets came dressed and leveled (sp), I would say a good job on those.

    The skunk stripe looks good.

I will call Jim at Musikraft Wednesday to see if he can fix these problems. Later, Mark

The next bad thing is that the shelf for the Floyd is not big enough to fit the entire nut on. (although enough of it is sitting on there to make it stable, 80% or so)

The 12th fret dots are close, 1/4" vs 6mm (I think), so the Musikraft dots are slightly bigger, although without a caliper it is hard to notice.

The heels are different than the Charvel heels also.

no, i don't really think it is.... they offer the same headstock, and will offer 1 pc "charvel style" construction, but i never got the impression that they were supposed to be copies, and frankly, i'm glad that they're not.

the floyd shelf thing is common for strathead necks, i've got that goin on with a strat neck of mine, and i know that warmoth won't do floyd preps on their vintage, or vintage modern style construction of necks.

mark, you mentioned calling musikraft to fix issues... what issues exactly? the back of the headstock is how they choose to make the necks, same for the heel. the only issue i can see is the floyd platform, and that's not really an "issue" per se. there doesn't seem to be any quality issues from what you've posted so far.

you mentioned that they leveled the frets, if that's true, that in itself is pretty nice, and not something that the others do.

When I talk to Jim, he keeps saying that they copied a SD S-head neck. I was under the impression that they wanted to copy it. The only big issue for me is the Floyd shelf, if they sell it as a Floyd shelf, IMO it should be big enough for the entire nut to rest on. Musikraft must take a regular neck and cut out the shelf. If this is all they are going to do, maybe they shouldn't offer the shelf at all. All of the other things are cosmetic. Even the extra material on the back of the headstock is fine. It makes it stronger, and if I wanted, I could get rid of it and make it more like an original.

gotcha. you're probably right in that they take a regular nut and cut the shelf. like i mentioned, i've got that issue on a guitar, and the nut has held just fine. probably not how one would want it, but it oughta hold, especially since you've got the thru the neck style.

i'm still surprised that they did the frets for ya, that's really nice.

I also forgot to mention that I asked if they could make the heel thicker to raise the string distance from the body, (so I wouldn't have to shim) and they made it 1.07" instead of 1". I thought that was very cool of them.
And I would also like to say that Jim was great to deal with. He always returned my emails and phone calls very promptly.

                Mark,

                Thread Revival!

So you've had this neck for awhile now. How is it fairing? Did you ever get the nut shelf issue resolved? Also, was the back shape of the Musikraft comparable to the Charvel neck?

                  Re: Musikraft neck evalutaion

The Floyd shelf was not deep enough for the nut from the factory. after I removed enough wood to make it fit, the nut overhang was under 1/16". (Not too bad at all) As for the neck shape, I ordered the thin C profile, and it is a bit thinner than my GMW strat necks, or the Jackson woodburn I have. The overall quality on the neck was great, and if your not looking for an exact SD Charvel copy, I think you would like it. As a comparison, I ordered several Customwoods necks that were to be exact copies of the SD stuff and I was not that impressed. Those profile are fuller and I had to do some shaping to get them more like the shape I am used to. Plus there were issues with the tuner holes being off and I had to mess with that a bit. I hope this helps you. Later, Mark

Is the neck profile/back contour pretty flat or is it pretty rounded?

I agree on the nut shelf thingy. You would think that if they were selling a neck prepped for a Floyd nut it would be damn near perfect like the GMW's are Having said that, a strat headstock neck that was originally cut or made for regular nut will not have enough space for the full floyd nut. If you were to have that Jackson woodburn neck set for a Floyd nut, it would be less than 80% the size of the nut but still functionable...if thats a word

you wanna sell that Jackson neck? hehehe...I have 2 Woodburns and love em
