i'm always concerned about carvin's historically low resale value and their non standard pickup routing.

I believe only their 7-strings are routed a little bit tighter. Their 6-strings are standard. I had a DiMarzio Super Distortion/Super set put into mine without any routing.

Re: Carvin - who\'s gottem? What\'s the deal?

I've had a few Carvins through the years. DC125 with the neck humbucker (DC127), X220, AE185, and a DC120 12-string. Overall, I like what they offer. The current neck specs are almost the same as a Jackson SL2H, except for the 25-inch scale length.

Yeah, the aesthetics on some of their body designs leave something to be desired. Especially on their basses. The top horn on the bolt-neck models looks like it's about to wilt away.

Some other gripes: I've seen relatively few of their burst finishes that didn't suck (black burst edge on a figured Koa top? I mean, WHAT THE FUCK). They don't put binding on the headstocks or fingerboards, so the clear coat has a tendency to check at the fret tangs. No scarf joint construction, but some people prefer that. Their pickups aren't very impressive, and they won't factory install something else. If they had made the CT line with 24 frets, I'd've already had one.

That's been my experience, also. I had an old DC145 in which I had no problem swapping pickups.

You can now get the 1988-89 vintage Jackson style pointy headstock too.

          [/ QUOTE ]
Since when? They'll get sued by Jackson. They did do a return of the other pointy one that came after that (ChickenScratch ordered one last year like that), but not the Jackson style... unless they somehow recently got permission from Jackson.

          [/ QUOTE ]

I'm quite sure it's the 1990-91 headstock that you get when you order a pointy now. They obviously don't want to be sued by FMIC or pay some ridiculously large licensing fee.

I like those '88-91 Carvins a lot better than the more recent ones I've played, because those older ones were aimed more at shredders, whereas they are going for a more, umm, "mature" demographic now...

I was told you have to ask for a pointy. There are several pics of brand new Carvins on their message board showing DC's with pointy headstocks. It is not listed in the catalog or on the website as an option.

If the new pointy headstock is a variation of the old 88-89 model that they got sued over it is certainly close enough for me.

Re: Carvin - who\'s gottem? What\'s the deal?

Back when I was on the Carvin boards a lot, they said they never were threatened with legal action over the Jackson style headstock. They just decided to do something different. But then again, it was the sales guys saying this. And we all know how sales guys like to tell stories.

I have one of the ct6ms, bought it at NAMM, At first it had a couple issues which they fixed but it took em way too long. Great guitar though sounds killer and is really versatile. Lately it's probably been getting the most playing time of any of mine.

At first, I thought it had to be Photoshopped but it looks legit. This thing is going to give me nightmares.

                            Here's my pointy Carvin!
                            '89 Ultra V

I've also owned a V220, but that just didn't really "work" for me.
I can't speak from personal experience, but, hangin' around a couple of other boards, I'm hearing that Carvin may not be as customer-friendly as they used to be.
The Carvin Board moderators are not the kind of guys you'd want to go drinking with either...
