Re: Speaking of EBMMs, Petrucci fans, i ask for re

After a lot of searching, I finally picked up an EBMM Petrucci a couple months back. I needed a guitar that could give me the electric versatility of an SL-1, which is my usual guitar of choice for shreddin', but I REALLY needed acoustic capability and preferably, the ability to have both an electric and acoustic signal simultaneously.

I had played one or two before and thought the necks were probably the best playing I'd ever felt. After finally getting one (Egyptian Smoke finish, matching head, bullet inlays with the "JP" at the 1st fret), it is my primary live and recording guitar. The pickups were not what I was used to so I had to make some minor mods to my tone at the amp as well as some changes in my effects rack but I really like the way the Dimarzios sound. The neck is a shredder's neck but that's not to say that it isn't equally good for fingerstyle acoustic stylings or whatever other style you might have in mind. I had a choice between getting a new Suhr with a piezo bridge or the Petrucci. IMO, the Petrucci's workmanship, attention to detail, fit and finish, are on par with the Suhrs I tried although I have never experienced better fretwork than on the new Suhrs. That's not to say that the EBMM Petrucci had any fret issues because it doesn't.
My JP, like I said, is now my primary guitar although I use 4 guitars for live use: a chlorine PC1 for standard tuning, strat type tones, clean electric settings, or modern crunchy stuff, the string-thru SL2H limited quilted from the VWall order a while back with EMGs for heavy stuff and alternate tunings, my green HRF on black GMW/Charvel SD (the Chucksplatter tribute guitar!) with a JB and dropped C# (10-60), and the EBMM.
I paid 1600 and some change for mine and it's in brand spankin' new condition; still has plastic on the covers, no pick swirl, etc. Very versatile guitar and it is so cool to be able to run the mag pups thru my Eventide, TC, and triple rectifier all the while sending a sweet acoustic signal direct to the board or to an ac amp. Granted, the piezo doesn't sound like my Taylor 914 but it sounds as good as any Takamine or Tacoma acoustic electric I've played.
Get one, you won't regret it.

You say the Petrucci has an asymmetrical neck. It's been a while since i tried one out so I can't really remember much except that it was comfortable. How is it compared to a Wolfgang/EBMM EVH neck?

I think that if you skip the piezos and matching headstock, you can save some $$$, but the piezos are one of the big draws on these. I'm another of the "I'd get the 7-string version if it didn't have that @#$#%ing basswood body" folks. As I said earlier, basswood doesn't give you much edge in your sound, and sevens really need a lot of edge to cut through properly.

Re: Speaking of EBMMs, Petrucci fans, i ask for re

yeah, the piezo is actually the big defining factor...and what makes me on edge is the basswood, because it can lack that edge...

but i really like Petrucci's tone, and i know a lot of it comes from him...does the guitar actually sound reminiscent of him? i know, dumb question, but thats th best i got for a sound comparison! i would definitely Not hate having a tone like him, i don;t find anything wrong with it, and the first time i heard DT jam together with the 'Ryche on the Art of Live DVD, i was kidding to a friend, "Dude, Petrucci's so amazing, and his sound is awesome. i'm gonna have to go and buy his sig. axe". i was laughing then. i had no idea i really wanted to go for it...

Yeah, it really does. Amazingly so, in my opinion. For good and bad--I haven't been fond of his rhythm guitar sound for a long time, probably since "Awake" or "Images and Words". This guitar just doesn't seem to give you a lot of 'chunk'. But that warm, singing lead tone he has--the JP will get you there if you've got any kind of technique. But I think that's really the only kind of sound it's well suited for.

                Yup pro-fusion.

Petrucci's tone (especially his rhythm) is nothing to talk about since Awake. Eventhough the basswood's been around since before then.

They're working on a neck thru Petrucci now with a figured top.

I assume EB resolved the neck issues they were having with this series when they first came out?

They sure dried up fast enough. Were in GC one year or two and no more. They felt incredible tho, very well balanced and comfortable to play.

I have 2 of the 6 string Petruccis and also 1 of the 7 strings. The guitars are just built really really well.I really like the versatility you get with it.The trem is prolly the best non locking tem I have ever used.I have purchased all of mine used and payed between 900 and 1300 for them.Mine are not piezo models because I dont care for the dual jack systems.I have a Suhr Standard with the Fishman Power Brige and that is the coolest piezo setup ever in my opinion anyway. As far as 7 strings go the best sounding and playing guitars I have are Ibanez J Custom 8527s of which I have 2....hope this hels you out some.

I bought my 6 string which had the piezo JP Inlays Matching Headstock in the Mystic Dream Color (of which I am not that fond of) for 1600 used but new like condition and that is about as loaded as you can get the only thing above it would be the same specs in a 7

WOW are tehy really going to do a neckthru? WOW! I am all over that and a figured top? Has EBMM ever done any neck-thru's?
