Gibson have to be the LEAST BANG FOR THE BUCK guitar there is. If you ever check out the Les Paul Forums it's nothing for those guys to spend 5K+ on a newpiece, then send it out for fret work and set ups, beofre they even get it. Then say what a great guitar they just bought. I don't get the Gibson appeal, way overpriced, sub standard construction.

I get the Les Paul appeal...

Tone...

Instant credibility...

And very often - beauty...

(Now, I would never spend $5K for some fancy top...That I think is crazy...But the attributes of a "regular" LP Standard/Custom have always spoken for themselves...The success/history/reputation of the Les Paul cannot be reckoned with...)

BTW - I LOVE my Les Pauls...

Les Paul Customs do it for me. No other guitar gets to me like a Les Paul does. Sadly I can't afford to buy one, just have to wait for that chance again. I screwed myself over

You forgot the pot and cap removal, installing the RS electronics kit, and whatever flavor of the month PuPs everybody claims are "the ones". Then the months of faux aging, or fading, then the sell off and start the process all over again; But, it's a Gibson, it has to be the best.

I own 2 Gibsons, and won't get another because of all the trouble I had with my LPC. They sent it to my local store and the truss rod was unattached in the neck. It took 18 mos back in 89/90 to get them to replace the instrument.
Never again, Piss poor instruments, piss poor QC and piss poor customer service.

I have been jones'in for a 'splorer for a while now. right now I am leaning towards a Hamer, I would like a USA model but they are kinda pricy, the Korean standards are pretty cheap. are they worth a damn. the newer ones are Chinese

my two that I have left.

i love gibson explorers but you will have to shop around for the right one. The early 90's (90-92) are my favorites. The quality was very consistant. Those years tend to be lighter for some reason. I guess it was the mahogany that they had in stock. The fretwork on most of the ones from that era IMO are very good too. My black 91 that I had forever was my main guitar for a while. I think the current owner is selling it in the classifieds recently. The finish on it was well.... used to say the least but it stayed in tune great/was very light and had great tone. The fretwork was excellent. If you can find one from this era I would check it out. I had 3 from the 90-92 era and all were very close in weight/tone/fretwork.

Check for a used Hamer USA. The prices are much better.

Also. If you want a differnet Headstock try DEAN. The 79 series is another nice built guitar. Or the older European ones (Made In Czech) are really nice.

BTW...your Korina needs a truss cover! I hate seeing it without it....looks like it's incomplete!

I have a 92 gibson 76 that is awesome.I paid 500 bucks for it.I put emg zakks in it and a custon sharp concepts rusyed steel guard and all black hardware on the guitar,The guitar was sent back to the gibson factorey in 94 due to a fret popping off.I would swear the custom shop did the refret due to the fretless wonder feel of this guitar.I just got lucky and got the mojo explorer.

I want an Explorer like Hetfield's MOP era creme Gibsons (i.e. set neck, no scratchplate, dot inlays, explorer head, stoptail and tunamatic). Anyone got any ideas? (I don't know what model Gibson Hetfield's was)

That is probaly the one i own now, and i think i did have it in the classifieds here, the reason i am selling is because it just sits in the case. Great guitar, i just dont play it, believe it or not i have been getting back into my 80 style guitars.

I have two 80's ESP's with the Jackson headstock that i love to death, they play so fucking great. I also love them because they have either just the tiny blocks for fret markers or in the case of my horizon just a ebony board, no markers at all. I also love them because ESP's records are so crappy from back then that i can pretty much do any mod and it wont effect the value. Not to mention these guitars play as good as jacksons at about half the cost.

I would have probaly gone with jacksons as i would rather support a USA company, but as many of you know i am not a big fan of the sharks, and most every jackson guitar has the sharks. And the ones that dont are usually the charvels or cheaper jackson line with poplar bodies. Yeah i am a tone snob and like either alder or mahogany. I still have my charvel Model A though and will probaly always keep that, but even this guitar still needs a good professional setup, but since i bought it used for under $400 i wont complain.

As to the gibson appeal, and them latley. The appeal is the name, the tone and if you willing to pay extra for the setup it should have gotton from the factory it is one great guitar.

But like many people say, there quality control is shit and you can every now and then get a real dog of a guitar. I got lucky with most of my gibsons as they sound great!

However i own many gibsons and i am slowly selling off some because i find them to be very limited unless you mod the fuck out of them, and then once you do that they lose there value. This is what i like about the super strats, you can have coil taps and replace the pickups and the values really dont go down.

I will always keep my les paul custom lite stop tail bridge and one SG. Right now i am also really digging the hell out of my firebird studio, however i just sold my white SG, and probaly gonna sell the explorer and my les paul custom lite with the floyd is on ebay right now, and maybe sometime in the future my 2004 white les paul custom might go up for sale.

If you get the right gibson they are great and you are willing to pay the extra for set up you just cant beat them for tone. However there are better guitars out there for the money with a bigger bang for the buck. But when you think about it, you can buy a used gibson les paul standard or custom for alot less then new, pay for a good setup and you are set. Also alot of these older used ones have allready had the professional setup so sometimes they come in perfect allready!

Also you can buy gibson's from certain places that will cut you a deal and allready do a good set up, these dealers you can find on the Les Paul Forum, they care about what they sell and want the costomer to be happy!

As to the people on the Les Paul Board, i am on there, alot of them are older guys and trying to get that 50's vibe or early 60's and that is why they pay that much and all those upgrades or the guitar in general. Like us they are trying to re-live there youth by getting the guitar the fantasized about as a kid!

Re: Gibson explorers

By the way, no ESP bashing on me please, i love these guitars and they are great. For those fellow ESP lovers, the first guitar link is my exact guitar except for the color. The second Link is the auction i won, and let me tell you the guitar looks alot better in person then it did in his pictures!

This is just like my main ESP, ESP Horizon, the only difference between this one and mine, is mine is a rusty color with no serial number and mine has the original pickups from ESP (SD's) this guitar obvious has the pickups replaced. Notice how on the one in this picture the serial number is stamped on the end of the fret board just like a jackson, i think someone had a jackson complex back in the 80's. Read the discription, as the guy jokes about his lack of ability on guitar knowledge. The price is very high and they will probaly never even get close to that, maybe around $800 at the most. I think it is also missing a screw in bushing where the Trem arm goes. But these guitars are great, nice contour body and great neck joint and super fast neck.

This is My second, My ESP Mirage Custom
i just got, i never thought the guy would take the offer of $599 because normaly they are between $600 and $700 on ebay and he had the BIN at $699, not to metion the Mirage custom neck throughs are hard to find. Yeah i probaly could have gotten it a little cheaper, but what the hell, great bang for the buck!

Right now there is also this ESP On Ebay i am watching, i am not gonna buy it, just want to see what the final price is as it is pretty much exactly the same as the one i just bought, just doesnt look as in as good of shape. Hopefully it will go for the price i paid so i dont feel like such an ass!

I've had many Gibson Xplorers including two korina 58' Re-issues,a few 70s,80s originals, even early 90s Re-issues & IMO my 85' Charvel Xplorer destroys every one of 'em:

Here's my '02 Gibby Explorer

This is my only gibson scale guitar and the frets are smaller than the med-jumbos/jumbo I like but that's a lot of wood and the 500t is sooo meaty. I have a black pickguard to complete the look, but I need to do some fitting arounf the pickup rings for it. Otherwise I am i looove.
