      Re: PRS SE opinions

I have the Tremonti SE, the Billy Martin SE, a PRS Custom 22 10-top, and a PRS Swamp Ash Special. The SE's are both awesome, I play them much more than the Custom 22. I prefer the pickups and feel of the Billy Martin over the Tremonti SE, and I prefer both of the SE's pickups sounds over the DragonIIs in the Custom 22.

The SE's are about the best out of Korea that I've seen (with Schecter being close second). I highly recommend 'em.

        Re: PRS SE opinions

Hey John, I have a Santana SE that I ordered from PRS about a year ago, and I really love it. It's light and very comfortable to play, and still has my favorite neck of all my guitars. It's kind of my backup guitar now (my Heritage is my main one) but I still really love it. I just put a Seymour Duncan Custom in the bridge position and it sounds even better. I really dig the Soapbar SE II's as well, but I'd recommend any of them. I think they're the best import guitars out there.

I have 2 (customized) SE's, the tremonti and the EG
I did replace the pickups (the EG came with 3 normal ceramic single coils which where a bit dull sounding)

I know that the soapbar pickups are single coil. How noisy are they? I will be playing with a JCM800 type distortion.

              Re: PRS SE opinions

P90s are SUPER noisy with any bit of gain. Unusable live IMO with distortion, but they do sound absolutly killer. I am paitently awaiting for the Bill Larence or Kinman noisless P90s to come out. I have a Dimarzio Virtual P90 in my SE SBII. The guitar is now usable live for me, but it doesn't have that P90 tone anymore.

                Re: PRS SE opinions

Well, I negotiated with the seller of that Santana (that several JCF'rs PM'd me to stay away from) that has the aftermarket pickguard and the P90's installed in it. It most likely has quality pickups in it(according to his description). The pickguard is single ply and stuck on with tape. It comes with a cool USA PRS gig bag (not the SE badged one), tools and trem arm (I could really use the gig bag for my 1991 CE24), and he sold it to me for $275.00 shipped. I'll take the chance with that price!
I was leaning towards a SE with humbuckers but I have a ton of guitars already with hums. A guitar with P90's will be useful for me for a few songs that my band does. If I don't like them I could always swap in some humbuckers since the body is already routed for hums.
I figure that I needed to get a PRS gig bag for my 1991 (the original case is really rough) and they usually sell for around $75.00 so I actually got this guitar for $200.00 shipped. If the trem arm fits my CE24 then I am even further ahead. The Ebay seller was very responsive.
I like to take chances. Usually it works out good.
Thanks for all the advise and responses. I played a few of these at the local guitar store. I couldn't find a single import PRS that wasn't set up and sounding mint. I hate to say it but there isn't much difference between the under $500.00 imports and the $2,500.00 USA's. I actually liked the humbuckers on the import a little better.

                  Re: PRS SE opinions UPDATE!!!

I just got the Santana SE with the P90's that I won from Ebay.
It is a trans red finish and the mohagony grain looks very nice. The fit and finish are both very good. It ain't no 1991 CE24 but its nice. The entire guitar cosmetically doesn't blow me away but it is certainly nice for the money.
What does blow me away is the tone, playability and set up on this guitar. I did a standard truss rod adjustment and I got the action so low it looks like the strings are sitting on the frets. No buzzing anywhere.
It plays effortlessly, the tone from the P90's is outstanding. I would compare the tone of this guitar to a VERY full sounding Telecaster. To give you an example, I can 100% nail the tone from Robert Plants Ship of Fools in the middle position of this guitar (both pickups on). Dial up the gain on your amp and be prepared for 60hz hum. Afterall, most P90's are not noise cancelling. These certainly aren't but if you play songs like Don't Fear the Reaper or old 70's rock and you don't require a ton of gain the P90's are certainly quiet enough and they REALLY cut through with clarity and punch. I really dig them and they are a nice change from humbuckers.
Mine came in a USA PRS gig bag (not the SE bag) and I gotta give PRS the 2 thumbs up for making quite possible the nicest and most protective gig bag I have ever seen.

These guitars are a fantastic value. I recommend that every JCF'r should own at least one of them.

                    Re: PRS SE opinions UPDATE!!!

Well, after almost 3 weeks of endless jamming on this guitar I am still way into it. The P90's rock. They sound so good I can actually live with the 60hz hum they produce.
This little Santana SE is quickly becoming one of my favorite guitars. I think I may need to get another one. Maybe a Tremonti this time around.
