question about baritone guitars

Is it possible to tune the tune the EADGB strings up so the guitar is in drop B tuning without hurting the guitar? I tried it last night on my brother's lynch guitar and the tension seemed pretty high. If it is a matter of string gauge (causing the high tension), what is the lowest possible gauge string I can get away with using without them being too floppy?
