• ESP Experts, help...WTF did I just buy??

OK....just got through with my usual Sunday routine, haircut, Dunkin Donut coffee, and cruise the local Pawnshop to see if anything cool has surfaced.

Usually, I'm disappointed as there is NEVER anything cool, until today

I saw a ESP M II Deluxe on the rack, and out of sheer humor value, took it down. OK, it has an actual Seymour Duncan humbucker in the bridge and an ESP single in the neck, which looks kinda like a Hot Rails with the 2 poles. It also has a real Floyd Rose tremolo, not licensed or anything like that. A real OFR

OK, on the tag, it said $109 w/hard case. At this point I'm like, fuck it, I can part it out and get my $$ back if all else fails. The case is a Yamaha molded case and lo-and-behold, the trem bar was in there (added bonus )

I asked the clerk if they'd take $100 for it with case. They agreed

It needs to be cleaned up. set up, and myabe the volume pot changed out, but it doesn't look that bad really.

So, WTF did I buy

What is the average value of these puppies??

No, I'm not going to become a follower of ESP's by any means, but for $100 bucks, I can't go wrong I don't think.

Re: ESP Experts, help...WTF did I just buy??

You did good.
Its ESP's middle of the road guitar that has a OFR.
They are ESP budget quality guitars.
They lost their butts...everybody bought up these budget guitars because they had mainly, a OFR on them.
Clean it up and set it up, you have a good working horse guitar. Congrats.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Yes, there's a bee in the pudding.

is the single slanted? what's the control layout? is the shape of the cavity route kinda like a coffin?

it says ESP on the head?

if so you have a late 80's REAL ESP M-II. GREAT guitars. GREAT price!!!!! those are all i played for years. the average cost back in 89-90 was around $1200.

killer score.
GEAR:

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

I'm done cleaning it up for now, tweaking the Floyd and the neck (the truss rod was completely slack )

I put some Linseed Oil on the neck, it sucked it up like a sponge

The volume pot and the imput jack were loose as Hell, so I tightened them up, no probs now

I think it will settle into itself over the next couple weeks after being tweaked.

Eh, fuck it, another player for $100.....how can you lose

Re: ESP Experts, help...WTF did I just buy??

Sounds like what I bought off a fellow JCF'r recently... I paid MUCH more than $100 for it, and still got a good deal. The one I have plays as well as any jackson I've had. I did invest a lot of elbow grease in mine... but it sounds and plays great. I played in on the 2nd hot for teacher video in the MP3 clips. It's become one of my main gigging guitars, since it has a floating floyd, and I'm not real worried about it getting knocked around.

Does it look like this?

Re: ESP Experts, help...WTF did I just buy??

OK...here's some pics I just took of it. It's in nowhere near the condition Pete's is appearance wise, but funtionally and sonically, it's great

I finally finished re-assembly, cleaning, de-furring (is that a word ), and setting up the Floyd and truss rod, pickups, tightened the tuners etc.

First impressions...well, it's not a Jackson/Charvel USA, but it is very good. The pickup in the bridge has a sticker with TB-4G (I believe JB ).

It plays well, I wish it would go just a tad lower action wise, but it's as low as it's gonna get (a little over 1mm) at this point in time.

For $100 w/HSC, I basically robbed them blind I think

Here's the pics.

Yeah, you pretty much robbed 'em blind. Congrats!

Those are nice-playing guitars--you might need to have the frets leveled in order to get the action lower. I have a late '80s ESP Mirage Custom (neckthru that looks exactly like a Soloist) that also plays great, but probably needs some fret tweaking. I'd guess your guitar is from the early '90s, based on the headstock, recessed trem and the logoed Duncan. ESPs from the '80s like mine had an Jackson-imitation pointy headstock.

Re: ESP Experts, help...WTF did I just buy??

When I had the neck off mine for stripping/oiling and also wetsanding and buffing the body - I noticed it had a built date of '94. Yours is probably close to this.

You ever want to get rid of it, let me know...

Sweet score for $100. Yeah, that's a JB Trembucker in the bridge, wound by someone with the initial G.

Good grab there Sammy. Any real ESP w/case is worth a hundred bucks all day long.
