Grabbed this at a yard sale today. Appears 100% original w/hardshell. Serial # is 891615, the last 4 frets are scalloped. Are there different models of Jem's?, value?
that's a SUPER early Jem. i forget the #, but it was available with the first run of green, yellow and pink jems. that large grip is the give away. i am sure someone else will come along with more info.
cool grab BTW!!
GEAR:
some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!
some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!
and finally....
i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!
That's a JEM7PBK from 1989, I believe. It's one of two Jem models that have the larger monkey grip toward the back of the guitar. Humbuckers should be Dimarzio PAF Pros. I think the single coils for these are custom made for Jems.
The neck is a Wizard. The thinnest neck they've ever put on a Jem.
I can't believe the stuff people find at yard sales and pawn shops. Nice score. Looks like it's in great shape too.

You're thinking of the original JEM777, which is a different model. The 777s have the smaller grip. This is a 7PBK, which came out a couple years later.

Actually, what you're thinking of is the Jem that is commonly referred to as the "Rootbeer Jem."
It came out shortly after the original Green, Yellow, Pink 777's. They were a transparent dark brownburst with this large style monkey grip handle, a dot neck inlay & pink pickups.
I would have to dig out the old catalogs, but I think this is from 89 or 90.....this is the second model (after the rootbeer jem) to have the larger style monkey grip. Not too common.
Please do us all a favore and don't disclose what you paid for it. I really can't handle it.
Thats an early one bro. Super rare, super collectable and super expensive. Its a great investment. Hang on to it. Its way better than a savings account or playing the stock market.

Erm, no it's not. The OP's guitar is defininately a 7PBK unless it's been refinished, had its pickups replaced, and had its fretboard replaced. The rootbeer Jem is the 7RB, which is a different model. See them here:
If you dont like, I,ll take it off your hands.....

The model you bought and the Root Beer are my all time favorite jems. Vai plays the guitar you bought on the track Die to Live on the Alien Loves Secrets DVD and VHS
