Dis'ing the Les Paul? I don't know about that.

Take a Les Paul with a thin 60's neck (a Classic, a 2002 or newer with the 60's neck, or an R0). The pickguard positions your picking hand like a hawk right over the strings. I like having that support for down fast sweeps or alternate picks.

Guitars without a support (I have two LP's without pickguards) I don't like because your hand has to float out there.

You might think I'm full of B.S., but EVH started on an LP too. He's just to whimpy to sling it through a Monsters of Rock concert, so he had to switch to a lightweight strat.

Eddie used a Burst (with removed neck pickup) on one of the early tours

Don't forget about Al DiMeola, that MF'er could burn on a LP!

80's built Kramers, Ibanez Jems, Ibanez Voyagers, Les Pauls, Jacksons, Charvels, BC Richs, ESPs, & Performances. The higher end stuff from the 80's models, all of these were built to shred & nothing else. With the right setup, strings, pickups, and frets, all of them.

You can shred on anything, just matters if your capable of it.

Someone here was shreding on a Squire for shits sake, that tells enough !

So, that raises the next question...
Name shredders who play Fender Stratocasters with 3 single coil pickups, 21 small vintage frets and vintage 6 screw trems that are " well set up".

I know that this is the JCF an all, but I sold 2 of my beloved model series Charvels for one very special Ibanez 3120 Prestige. Yeah, it's got the thin wizard neck, but it also has TONE. The guitar's body is Mahogany with a Maple top (like Les Pauls). But, if it weren't for an excellent setup, then it probably wouldn't be worth that much to me.
Sorry dudes, but this, to me is the ultimate shred guitar that can do a whole lot more.

Re: Best shredding guitars. What\'s your opinion?

I've gotta agree that a person could shred on anything, even back in the 50's. I'm not saying it would be as easy by any means, but it could be done! Have you ever heard a good Spanish guitarist? That is shredding for God's sake! They have an acoustic guitar that I could almost promise you is not set up worth a shit, and some of them don't even use picks and they fuckin' fly on those things!

That's not what it's all about anymore. Now it's about getting a guitar that is easier to move on without compromising the tone. Not that that is a bad direction, it's just another factor we have today.

Anyone remember the video of the guy sitting in the dark room with the strat (white I think ) talking about how it was late but he could not sleep and he was afraid he would wake everyone up.That guy was a monster on a strat....anyone save that BTW?

Can't believe this generated so much conversation, cool thread.

I believe you can blaze on anything once you get comfortable with. My first good guitar was a late 70's strat with the large headstock, medium sized 21 frets and I could shred on it no problem. Ironically my jackson polka-dot V was the hardest guitar for me to get used to. I was all strat shaped until then and it took me a long time before I could play anything comfortable. I still prefer full-sised strat bodies and although I own a dinky body I never understood downsizing the body as a regular strat isn't a bulky body thats hard to get around with

I never understood the term fast neck....if the player can't play fast then a so called "fast neck" ain't gonna have them smoking up and down the fretboard Fat necks like like the JCF 01 werent a problem for me either or any more comfortable than a wizard warper neck was.

Jazz dudes tear it up on 335's, classical dued blaze it up on V shaped neck nylon string classical guitars etc etc...guitar shapes or makes doesnt matter, its the player who can shred, not the guitar.

The Rand I used to own was the best, bar none. Amazing axe. I think someone around here owns it now:

'86 Model 6! I bought mine new in '87 and it's still the guitar I can shred with the best. And in the 3 years since I got back into playing I've had some nice guitars - LP Classic, two Jems, YJM strat, Kamikazee, etc. Those are all gone now but I do have 2 Wolfie specials that I love. But when it comes down to it, like if I entered a Guitarmageddon, I would grab the 6. Which all points to what a few have already said, it's what you are most comfortable shredding with.
