• Best shredding guitars. What's your opinion?

In my opinion, I love these brands in this order:

Peavey. Can't beat a Vandy.
Gibson '97 V. I'd try to throw a Floyd in though.
Schecter, FR model.
B.C. Rich, if you can get used to that neck! (Nothing below the NJ's)

Guitars I just can't seem to get along with:

Les Pauls. The neck is just horrible on most.
Ibanezes. I like the Satriani models, but that's about it. I just didn't like'em. Good, but not my forte.

What do you guys think?

The best pure-shred guitars I've ever encountered were either -
1. The early Ibanez RG550 series. Easiest playing guitars of them all. However, the build quality was lousy, so there's none left.
2. BC Rich Gunslinger. Again, the earlier the better.

Re: Best shredding guitars. What\'s your opinion?

Yup, the Mercury series had flat wide necks. Great for shredding.

Ibanez RG550s are a no brainer.

Peavey Destiny. The neck isn't super wide, but very flat, and comfortable.

Jackson King V. The necks on both my KV4, and my friend's KV Pro are both very shred friendly.

BC Rich Gunslinger/STIII. Well, aren't they basically the same guitar except for the pickup configuration?

everything I own is my best shredder I do prefer 22 fret full-sized strat bodies (Charvel, Jackson, GMW, Fender). I don't have any problems shredding on any of mine.

Yep, I know several individuals who can shred effortlessly on Les Pauls. I'm not included.

The Ibanez JEM and early Sabres are pure shred machines.

But give me a Soloist over those anyday.

Re: Best shredding guitars. What\'s your opinion?

You can shred on anything really. Its just a matter of getting use to it and having a descent neck.

If you are going for full speed and not worried too much about vibrato or tone then Ibanez. Due to their necks.

Another step up in quality and another good shredder with a superb neck is the Hamer Californian.

And I have played just as fast on my Jackson Soloist as my Ibanez Jem.

Personally I prefer larger necks so I prefer my PC1 over anything and can shred just as fast on my PC1 as I could on anything else - just a matter of adjusting. But a thin neck is easier.

I have to have good tone so I take tone into account also.

hmmm... so, what you are saying is that any well set up guitar can be considered a shredder?
I disagree.
Case in point... A Fender Stratocaster with 3 singles, 21 of those super tiny thin frets and a vintage 6 screw trem.
There aren't too many guys who are shredding on those.
The definition of a shredder to me usually includes:
22-24 JUMBO frets
Double locking trem, stringthru or stoptail
Humbuckers (or at least one in the bridge)
thin flat and wide fretboard

Shredders usually DON'T have:
21 small vintage frets
single coil pickups
vintage trems
fat baseball bat sized necks

So, that raises the next question...
Name shredders who play Fender Stratocasters with 3 single coil pickups, 21 small vintage frets and vintage 6 screw trems that are " well set up".
What about a "well set up" Fender No-caster??
I don't think anybody could truly shred on one of those.
Imagine having somebody ask you to pull a guitar off the rack and start shredding.. on the rack is an Ibanez Jem and a stock Fender 62 reissue strat. Which one would you grab if they were both "well set up"??
If your answer is the Fender, your full of sh!t.
