Re: Best shredding guitars. What\'s your opinion?

JG, what about Yngwie? I really think that whatever's most comfortable to someone is a "shredder." I can play better and faster on a Les Paul or an SG moreso than an Ibanez or a Jackson because that's what I'm more comfortable with.

I tend to play my best on my EBMM Morse, but I think that's because I've had it so long and know the neck so well. That probably doesn't make sense.

I was so hoping somebody would bring up the Maestro.
Lets see:
Scalloped neck
Jumbo frets (although they don't really matter when a neck is scalloped)
Stacked single coil sized HUMBUCKERS..

Roy Buchanan? Danny Gatton? Pretty awesome tele players. Shred in their own unique voices.

wow dude, you're reading way too much into that.

there's plenty of jazz dudes that can rip on a big, fat hollowbody. as you know, most accomplished jazz players can shred, and i don't think you see them playin jems.

your playing ability shouldn't vary too much when you go from one guitar to another. how does fret size impact your speed, or overall shredness? it doesn't. how do pickups impact your ability? they don't.

i understand what you're saying, that there's country styled guitars, jazz styled guitars, classical guitars, and "metal" guitars. i think a guy like, say, steve stevens could mop the floor with any guitar.

point being, once again, it's not the guitar (provided the guitar is set up well), it's the player.

Re: Best shredding guitars. What\'s your opinion?

Hamer Diablo is a fine shredder guitar, made in USA too.

Unmodded Strat shred player? How about Uli Roth? Other than a thicker whammy bar, his '75 Strat was stock during his Scorpions days. Listen to the into of The Sails of Charon, if that ain't shredding, well...

He did have the Strat modded later on in Electric Sun with the fingerboard extended to 23 frets.

Fully agree, but to me, each player with a certain level of skills will notice a difference if a scalloped neck is used for shredding stuff:
the hand will be more relaxed and is free to move with a chord shape, allowing you to sweep arpeggio's (look at Ygnwie).
Or at least, that's my opinion

Acoording to the list...
Any of them except the Ibanez's should do ya.

My take on it...
San Dimas Charvel's are top notch...intend to get one.
Jackson's are good to go.
Some ESP's are very good as well.

I can shred on my old Peavy predator so I'm not really what the point is in all of this.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

i started to seriously train myself, woodshed and really dig into guitar and speed on my c shaped, medium-jumbo, 21 fret fender strat. 3 single coil, the works. always wanted another fret...but that was cool for me.
just needs locking tuners now, and a set-up, .

now i can fly and seriously spoil myself on my petruch!

Re: Best shredding guitars. What\'s your opinion?

I agree that the player is more a factor than the type of guitar. I can play just as fast on my Hamer Artist with the vintage carved neck (think 50's Les Paul) as I can on my Toothpaste Charvels or my Wolfgang. But, the most comfortable guitar with which for me to play fast, has to be my 650xl hands down. The Ibanez Wizard necks were too thin for me to be comfortable with. But that doesn't mean I couldn't play them.

Re: Best shredding guitars. What\'s your opinion?

I don't know there jsully. I can shred with the best of 'em and when I go into guitar stores I have never grabbed a guitar that played as well as my personal ones at home.

I think there is a limit to what you can shred on.

And I have both bolt on and neck throughs at home but they are great guitars and are set up very well (PC1, Charvel, Warrior and Californian currently).

I think it takes some getting use for some guitars - days or even weeks. Now it may be that I am oversensitive or something.

But I have played literally hundreds of guitars in stores and many of them play fine. But most of them feel like crap compared to the quality of my guitars and I can feel the difference. They simply don't play as well.

If you took an Ibanez off the rack and then took a Gibson Hollwobody there would be no comparison. Construction does make a difference me thinks.

Look at all the improvements in amps and equipment. You could not shred back in the 50's if you wanted to because the equipment was just not sensative enough to pick up the legato phrases and modern techniques that guys can do nowadays.

Yeah there are plenty of guys who have "non shred" guitars and can play great. But I think to a point or should I say that needs to be qualified.

I am one of those lucky players that was gifted with speed and I guarantee you put an shred guitar in my hands next to a guy with a big ol honker and there ain't no way he is going to hold a candle to the way I can rip it up on a shred machine.

Yngwie modified his strats tremedously. Don't forget the metal nut on his guitars also not to mention his 8 gauge high E string and special pups, the 2 distortion boxes he uses, etc...

I mean the differences in guitars is what drives the whole industry. I would not take a GMC Gremlin to a drag race so to speak.

That said, Yeah I think you could shred on Most guitars within reason - but there are definitely certain attributes that make one guitar better and easier to shred on than another.

A maple-boarded SD charvie has my vote any day of the week!

A properly set up soloist (or RR aint too shabby either IMHO and once you get the neck conditioned - GWM's really kick ass too for that matter). I will admit that an 80s maple boarded BC Rich gunslinger is in the running as well.
