Re: Rand Guitars

The V is very cool. I knew that Rand built one but this is the first time I actually saw it. What do you know about this instruments history?

D.M.,
When did you last make contact with him? I've heard rumors for a few years now that he passed away, and I've also heard people dispute that, yet you are the first person that I know has actually made contact with him since 1993.

I know nothing mate. But the owner is a quite active JCFer(RacerX). I am sure if we bump this thread constantly he will give a visit and clue you in.

Re: Rand Guitars

Guys I found some. I don't know for sure if I will pick one up or not.

I have a Hamer Californian which is fairly similar - 27 frets, mahagony body, excellent upper fret access.

I am thinking about it.

OK I understand the playability issue. What about tone - thats what is key to me. I typically like maple fretboards - they sound more accoustically loud to me and the notes are tight.
Do the Rands have Rosewood fingerboards or ebony? How are the highs? Do the notes ring like bells? How is the sustain?

Re: Rand Guitars

Tone is a very subjective thing, and differs even between like models built from the same components. When I purchased my Rand new in Feb. 1988, I chose it from a selection of 6 nearly identical instruments, the only difference being paint scheme and two of the guitars had no neck pickup. All were mahogany bodied with pau ferro fingerboards on glued in necks and equipped with original Floyd's and Anderson H2+ humbuckers. I played all 6 and two clearly stood out above the rest (the purple one that I bought and a yellow one with red markings). I have played many more since then, with a variety of different pickups (EMG's, Duncan JB, Duncan Screamin' Demon, Anderson H3+) and while I have never heard a bad one, I have yet to hear one that sounds as good as mine or the yellow/red one.
If i had to generalize the tone, I would say that it has a mellow high end and a prominent upper mid push, as well as a nice, growling low end with no mush. Obviously this will depend greatly on the amplifier being used. Through the years I have used this guitar to great effect with an ADA MP1 with a BBE through a 2:90 power amp, a Hafler/Bogner Triple Giant, a Fender Tonemaster, various Marshalls, and most recently a Mesa Stiletto. Harmonic content is very rich and full and some great clean tones can be had by combining the two pickups. About the only drawback is you can't get a true neck pickup tone because of the 27 frets.
Let me know if I can answer any more questions.

OK Kenn, I'll post some Rand pics. All I currently have are some "action shots" from a gig about 5 years ago. I threw a pic of the LTD in there as well...I played it on one song that night for the photo shoot. ADMIN EDIT: please don't offer items for sale as a junior member.

Re: Rand Guitars

Ed Roman says he has a couple. Both have EMGs.

Guitarnet.com has three - pink, yellow and purple/red. From what I can tell 1 has EMGS and two have passives.

Thanks for the tip. The yellow one is the same one that I talked about earlier when addressing the tone of Rand guitars.

Here's another shot of my Rand

There's a pretty large thread from last year also....exact same thread title You should look for it; it has a good history of my V.

I also heard Rand passed away within the last couple years.

Don't tell me I killed this thread!

Rupe, I was able to find my original thread:

http://www.jcfonline.com/ubbthreads/...5&fpart=1&vc=1

It starts with me looking for info on my V before purchasing it and spans a 3 month period so it is quite interesting to read.
There's lots of background info on the Rands owned by myself, Joel, Kennslp, Viv Campbell info, pics, etc. Feel free to reply in there to bump it up!
