GMW possibilities

Ah, the endless search for the perfect guitar...

So I was thinking about getting one of the new Charvels and then, for whatever reason, started getting into the strat headstock, but the EVH models just aren't my cup o' tea, not to mention they're too pricey.

So I turned my attention to GMW and Warmoth. I remembered that GMW could no longer do strat headstocks ... or at least, that's what I've heard.

So I priced a Warmoth strat exactly the way I'd want one. Assmbly required, of course [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] That's really not so bad, but what scares me is their fret-dressing/crowing statement on their site. Not sure if I want a guitar I've got to take to a luthier to get set up.

So I looked at GMW and at first decided to ask Lee about refinishing my DK2LE ... I'd settle for that, but then thought about something. What if I bought a Warmoth (or similar) neck and sent it to GMW so they could put together a custom? Seems reasonable, right?

So, this may be the start of my first GMW custom. I'm keeping my fingers crossed something like this can be done and for about the same price as a full GMW custom order.

Lee won't build guitars around other parts anymore. He is building serialized GMW guitars only... I think. [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Okay, so how are they making serialized guitars with no one knowing what the headstock looks like? It's been over a year, right? Have they just not made any? On their site, they still show the rock replicas but have cut the headstocks off in the photos. Surely somebody's ordered one and knows what they look like. I just talked to Lee. He told me that it should be soon. Of course how many times have we all heard that before.

My understanding is that Lee is clearing the backlog of orders, and starting to build the first 20 or so serialised GMWs, of which a decent number have already been sold. I'm not sure if he plans to build 'stock' guitars (i.e. a model range) or if he's just getting to a point where the first 20 are available for publicity or whatever.
I've heard descriptions of the new headstocks, but not seen one yet.

Lee is doing what he can on the back orders but he keeps telling me that Dan is swamped. As for those that backlog, 2 of them are mine. So if you're thinking about having GMW build or refin a guitar with a graphic, be prepared to wait. But it is well worth it! [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

I have not had the fortune of dealing with Lee's work yet so I can't speak to that. however I can tell you he is a hell of a nice guy, knows his stuff and is very patient. If you get a dialogue going with him I can guarantee he will do his best to make you happy. I fully intend to one day get a custom from him, probably the second and last custom shop guitar I will buy.

As for Warmoth, they are also great. The Warmoth guitar I have is fantastic but the neck isn't a warmoth. However I have played on several Warmoth necks and none of them needed to be recrowned. They are just trying to cover their asses I think. In some situations if you want a certain set up you might need to have them crowned, but generally I'd say its not an issue. Though others here may have different stories to tell. Warmoth is cheap and very good at what they do (and fast) however if you get a guitar completely built by them you have the added cost of having to take it to a luthier for assembly or doing it yourself (if your good at that kind of thing).

However good Warmoth is, they can't touch the quality of work Lee does IMO, just check out someof the guitars people here have gotten from him. His work is amazing.

truthguy, don't be to afraid of a Warmoth neck. I have two guitars with Warmoth strat necks and they are both my best players.

One of them is a GMW Star body with a Warmoth neck. Lee did the body and the floyd posts, all I did was add the neck and wire it up.
