Fender Strat Thickness question

Hey Guys,

i was looking at my fender strat yesterday, and it occured to me that my mexi body is around a little more than an inch and a half but not quite two inches.

what is the usual thickness for these bodies? does it vary?

and also, what difference in sound and tone, does a staggered strat pup offer, as opposed to a flat poles pup?

Your measurement sounds about the same as my Custom Shop Strat.
Staggered pole pickups have different string volumes due to the height difference of the pole pieces...those closer to the strings will be louder. Many people still like this configuration for it's vintage sound and feel, but if that is not your sound, then flat pole pieces are the way to go. The staggered pole pickup was actually designed around a wound g string, which was typical back in the 50's and 60's. Because most of us play with plain 3rd strings these days, the g string can be a bit out of balance with the rest due to it's low pole piece. At loud volumes this isn't very obvious, but it shows up more prominately when recording quieter passages. Bottom line is if it sounds good to you, then use it.
