Re: John Mayer Signature Strat??

I'm glad I listened to a lot of other genres of music before I discovered metal a few years ago. If I had found metal first, I would not nearly have as much of an open mind as I do today, since metal sort of has an addictive property for me.

Now to go talk to my friend and see if she's serious about our pop band.

Okay, I have to rag on Fall Out Boy. How can you tell the differance between Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, Hawthorn Heights, and all the other whiney singer bands? The singers all sound the same, I just seem to be missing this Emo thing if that is what it is.

          Re: John Mayer Signature Strat??

They all sound completely different. For One, Hawthorne Heights is more aggrssive sounding than the other two, and has a screamer/guitarist and a vocalist/guitarist. Fall Out Boy is poppier and has one singer. Taking Back Sunday has essentially a main singer and a vocalist who does mostly backups and also plays guitar.

the singers all sound completely different if you spent a little time actually listening, bro!

But i can see how its not everyone's cup of tea, and how it can be stereotyped, but a lot of bands are a lot differenty than each other!

          , have a good day!

Yeah, it's just like any genre... they all sound the same to the non-listener, but as you dive in deeper, you start hearing huge differences, and might be amazed at how broad that genre is with all its various subgenres. Every genre has its own stereotype and people that bash that stereotype.

They play all of these bands on Alt Nation which is on Sirius so I hear them daily. When I said rag on Fall Out Boy I should have been more specific to EMO or what ever people have tagged this genre with. Fall Out Boy themselves are not that bad. To me the voicing just sounds too similiar between alot of the bands, but there are some stand outs. Of which I guess would I would say I like Alkaline Trio or maybe Jimmie Eat World(if they are EMO who knows?)the most. The others I could take or leave, just not inspiring to me. Also as you all know liking J/C guitars seems to lump a person into the metal head category which I am very from. I will give anything a chance it just has to sound original. I will now do my part to unhijack this thread sorry if it got off topic.

                  Re: John Mayer Signature Strat??

haha, is all good man. yeah a lot of bands now have certain characteristics that make them sorta sound like others, like the having screaming/melodic singing duos and stuff. but yeah, you'll find more of a different style with older bands like Alkaline Trio and Jimmy, as well as Face To Face and others.

                  more mayo insights?

                    Re: John Mayer Signature Strat??

I read an interview with Mayer in some recording mag where he said that he had been trying to be the next SRV before getting into the singer/songwriter thing. I'm sure he's pretty thrilled to be getting a signature strat. Now as to whether his name will actually help sell many strats, that's another matter, since (from what I can tell), his audience seems to consist mostly of giggly teenage girls, who I can't imagine are going to buy a bunch of $1400 strats.

Personally, I can't say I've heard his music more than once or twice, since I don't watch MTV or listen to Top-40 radio. If he's doing what he wants, well then good for him. As to the notion that "we should bow down before him as an artist because he's selling a whole bunch of records," well I think that's just crap. I'm not going to call Britney or the BackDoor Boys "great artists" just because they sold a shitload of records. The mainstream biz sells a lot of music that has all the artistry of a toaster--but it's got a great beat and you can dance to it...

Like seventh said, if you are not into that genre then you cant tell. I am the same way with newer metal these days, they are start to sound the same after awhile, but for you people into it you can tell the difference of bands, just not my style those bands. In any genre you will have bands taht stand out and have a very distinct style, then you will have bands that are all close to the same thing. Personaly i think fall out boy is a little different as the singer is not so whinney.

I love more of rock/indie bands, groups like fall out boy, taking back sunday are considered more indie/emo then punk/emo. LIke metal it is split up into many different catagories, you have punk, pop punk, indie, rock, screamo, emo, folk etc, I can tell the different styles, but sometimes they are mixed so it makes it harder etc...
