• Finally, My New GMW

I've waited a long time to create this post and share my first custom made guitar with you guys. This guitar was designed and ordered in tribute to a guitarist many of you may not be familiar with. Eddie Hazel was the original guitarist for the group Funkadelic, which I'm sure many of you have heard of. Eddie is renowned as a funk/hard rock pioneer who influenced many players with his incredible talent. Sadly, he succumbed to liver failure brought on by years of substance abuse and hard living...but he left an awesome legacy of music behind to be enjoyed forever. Maggot Brain is perhaps the song he is most closely associated with and obviously one of my favorites.

OK, the specs: One piece body of Mahogany, with maple archtop cap and natural edge faux binding;
Insanely figured 24 fret birdseye maple neck (oiled) with ebony fingerboard...no inlays, reverse headstock;
Dunlop 6100 fretwire, Schaller straplocks, locking Sperzels (no string tee), bone nut;
Volume, tone, two mini-switches for series/off/parallel wiring (inspired by Tom Anderson pickup switching system);
Mahogany rear cavity plate, GMW angled/scalloped neck joint;
Seymour Duncan pickups - Jazz/Custom combo;
Custom engraved personalized neck plate (Lee provided the plate and I had it engraved at a local trophy shop).

Just picked her up on Friday and haven't had time to plug her in and give her a rip...to be honest, this guitar is so beautiful that I'm almost afraid to! It is stunning to behold in person. Dan Lawrence absolutely nailed the graphic (a reproduction of the Funkadelic lp cover "Maggot Brain" and also a script logo on the headstock).

GMW will never make another guitar exactly like this one. You can't get 24 fret bolt-on necks any longer, and Lee says he'll never make another matching wood cavity cover...so I feel even luckier.

Personal note...there have been many stories reported about Lee Garver and GMW throughout the Internet and this forum. All I can share is my own personal experience with him. Throughout this process, he was a perfect gentleman and I couldn't be more pleased with my experience with him. For example, I was concerned about the quality of birdseye neck I would receive for the upcharged price, and Lee told me he'd get me the best one he could find. Guys, this is one of the most incredible necks I've ever seen. In addition to being full of figure, it has some serious flame going through it as well. He came through for me on that promise. If anyone is considering ordering a GMW and would like information about them, please feel free to email or PM me and I'll be happy to share my experience with you.

OK, enough babbling. Sorry for the long post. Enjoy the pics (hope they turned out good, I'm a digital camera novice)!

Awesome looking guitar, and I concur with you on dealing with Lee: Nothing but good here either.

Wasn't Eddie in 24-7 Spyz as well?
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable

Thanks guys. Glad you dug it. And no Nelli, you're thinking of Jimi Hazel who played with 24-7 Spyz, but his stage name was influenced by Hendrix and Eddie Hazel.

Re: Finally, My New GMW

Fantastic of course but its nothing I haven't come to expect from Lee's work. Its a long wait but everyone who seems to get one from GMW is knocked dead by the quality. Make sure to let us know how she plays. Truly a stunning guitar and whats cool is that I can tell you really developed this idea extensively, it shows in the detail of the guitar. A good custom isn't just the work of the luthier and the artist (painter) but also the person who came up with the original idea. Some day I'm gonna get a guitar from Lee, sad to know he won't be doing any more 24 fret bolt necks though, or wood covers. How are those done anyways? Is it a laminate over a standard cover plate or is all wood? I've seen some companies that do the wood neckplates too, I assume those have to be laminates.

And because its asked in every GMW thread ever made, I'll jokingly ask the question thats on everyone's mind...New headstock?!

That's a great story and a very cool guitar.

Play it hard...don't just hang it on the wall.
