yea I know just for kicks I worked up a quick quote and it came out at just over 3 grand. Not counting the pricey shipping. While I don't think they are "scamming" anyone I would be hesitant to deal with that much money and a company I don't know enough about. May be cheaper than some custom shops but your looking at considerable risk. To me its not worth it unless you have something really customized in mind that might be to pricey from an American Luthier like Lee.
The main thing I like is the gallery forum with the progress pictures. Even you Shamray naysayers gotta admit thats a cool thing (I wish Jackson did that, yea I know logistics make the thought of it even a bit silly, but still).

Jackson DOES that, at least to some extent.
I'd be 10x happier in that case. You get the satisfaction of having the real thing, while some other people are playing cheap knock-offs.

Yeah, really. Ken Lawrence is a bass player and mostly makes basses anyway... when he's not working in R&D for Mesa/Boogie. I don't think he'd really care too much if someone incorporated a few of his ideas.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
Ken was pissed about the Shamray thing from what I heard. I think its funny someone would pay close to three grand for a fake KL I paid a little more for my real one.
By the way Alembic does that with their customers on line showing pics of their customs as they are being made.
Also Ken is making alot of explorers now a days their is one pic with like 12 explorer bodies on his work bench.

Body shapes like the explorer strat head those get stolen all the time thats fine. Two of my friends that ordered KL explorers spent alot of time designing inlays for their custom shop KLs and then someone stole the pics sent them to Shamray and said I want a KL explorer with the same inlays and finish. By the way the finish was a unique design with the wood and paint combination that was copied as well. Thats what I have a problem with.

I see, so you only have a problem with guitar makers that steal from your friends. Stealing from others is fine.

It was not my inlay design that was stolen it was my friends' but I was upset that I did get a real KL explorer and now they are making cheap knock offs, but like I said it makes me feel better knowing they cant get the headstock right and the Shamray body shape is based on a Gibson explorer not an ESP explorer like the KLs are and there is a difference.

Cool, I'll have to check them out. Not that I'll be getting another custom anytime soon but somewhere down the line I'd like to completely design a guitar from the ground up. Body, inlays everything completely unique. Lee was my first choice but he just seems to be so backed up, I mean his work is incredible but a 2 year wait? Thats alot of money tied up in something that doesn't exist.
