How do people manage to lose tremolo cavity plates? It's not really too hard to remember to put it back on after you unscrew it. Or do some players purposely leave them off? This has been bugging me for quite some years now.

Re: One thing i could never understand.........
I take em off & leave them off, but I put them and the screws in a sealed envelope, usually back in the OHSC.....Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

It seems lots of people take them off and leave them off, but I have no idea why. Vai takes his off, stuffs the cavity with tissue paper and tapes it closed again so the springs don't vibrate audibly on stage. I just leave the covers on, myself, but I've often wondered about the appeal of removing them.Courtesy, Integrity, Self-control, Perseverance, Indomitable Spirit

It's too bad manufacturers don't routinely make cut-outs in them to allow adjustments without removing the plate. My Squier had 2 slots to allow you to get a screwdriver in to adjust the claw, and that was really nice. I think Ibanez puts slots and a hole (for adjusting the trem bar) in the backplates of their current models.
I never even drilled holes for or mounted a backplate on my Warmoth.

I routinely take them off (but I store in a plastic baggie in the case like neilli).
The reason is quick adjustments like mentioned above. This is especially needed for floating floyds. Just the movement from a house to a hot vehicle to a gig can throw the neck and spring tension off. Rather than having to undo all the locknut screws, tune with tuners, re-lock, then final tune with fine tuners, it's much easier and quicker to grab a philips screwdriver and tighten/loosen the trem spring claw a little to bring the strings back to pitch(then a quick final tune with the fine tuners).

I think it's a good idea to keep the plates one. Man if you get a belly hair or lower stuck in one of those springs you might go to a falsetto real quick. I am a true ass set to this board.

This is proof of another dimension, not only of sight and sound, but a place that is chock full of guitar trem cavity plates, Floyd rose trem arms, and all the socks that go missing from the laundry.
