I second that, big time. Just don't go for the early 90's Specials, they had a wicked thin neck. The mid to late 90's were a little better, good medium sized neck. Here's my Hamer Special FM on the right. Might look familiar to some people here.

I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
Being a Tony Iommi fan, I've always liked the *idea* of the SG, but I'm always sorely disappointed when I play one. They never seem to have much balls in the upper register--notes just kinda die quickly up there. Also, the balance is bad, as others have said.
If I had to get an SG, I'd go for an SG Standard from the late '70s-early '80s. Those were the ones with the larger, sharper 'horns' and necks that were set more deeply into the body. Better balance, sound, and playability all around. But, of course, they aren't "vintage," so the nitwits at Gibson abandoned those in favor of '60s-style reissues with the original crappy design. Ahh, progress Gibson-style.
