Don't worry - I'll smack her if it comes to that. You do not sell guitars to buy shoes. You skimp on food to buy shoes! ~Mrs Tekky 06-03-08~

Ditto. The body is also a little fatter, which I prefer.

If you need to be talked into buying a certain type of guitar - whatever it is - it's likely a purchase that you'll later regret.

Buy the SG- great quitar. Light, easy to play, etc:

I bought mine new and it plays every bit as well as my SL1, IMO. Sounds awesome with the 81/85, too.

I second that, big time. Just don't go for the early 90's Specials, they had a wicked thin neck. The mid to late 90's were a little better, good medium sized neck. Here's my Hamer Special FM on the right. Might look familiar to some people here.

my only thought is that it better be an ebony-boarded SG...why else bother?

Well forget it, I can't buy a new guitar now, I have to save my money for gas. My Melody Maker will have to do.

Re: Talk me into buying an SG

Being a Tony Iommi fan, I've always liked the *idea* of the SG, but I'm always sorely disappointed when I play one. They never seem to have much balls in the upper register--notes just kinda die quickly up there. Also, the balance is bad, as others have said.

If I had to get an SG, I'd go for an SG Standard from the late '70s-early '80s. Those were the ones with the larger, sharper 'horns' and necks that were set more deeply into the body. Better balance, sound, and playability all around. But, of course, they aren't "vintage," so the nitwits at Gibson abandoned those in favor of '60s-style reissues with the original crappy design. Ahh, progress Gibson-style. i really lked my SG alot, the only problem i had was the slim taper neck. it played & sounded great, had some small finish flaws but not bad.
