Re: Poll: Used GMW Strathead or New Charvel?

I'm asking for opinions...how is that flip-flopping?

I think this is interesting, espically considering the votes are so closely matched.

I've had about a dozen GMW's...you'll notice I don't have any now. I really don't think they're all that. I'm not blown away by the Charvels, either. But I've not spent nearly the same amount of time with them, either, so that's not a fair comparison.

But that's not the point. The point is, i'm interested in hearing what others think.

Can I do that without being accused of "Flip-Flopping"?

Great Pat...you missed your calling in life. You should have been a politician!

Lets try this: Both guitars are two Duncan humbuckers, strat body shape, solid colors, top mount Floyd, 22 fret, ebony board, standard heel, etc. The only difference at a glance is one has a strat headstock (GMW) and the other had a pointy headstock (Charvel). You can only buy only one. Make a choice.

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe that's because my career is uncomfortably close to dealing with politicians.

And if you narrow it down like that, I'll go with the Charvie. I prefer the slimmer necks on the pointies.

Re: Poll: Used GMW Strathead or New Charvel?

All things being equal, the tie-breakers for me are the "real factor" and, most importantly, customer support. I will take the Charvels hands down.

yo chuck, what i meant by "flip floppin'" is that you were narrowing your criteria a few times, nothing more

there will be a day when charvel makes a strat head( a warren line in the near furture) , more so than they do now, but i'm guessin' it will be a lot more than a gmw would cost

Re: Poll: Used GMW Strathead or New Charvel?

I personally would go with the Charvel.

With it being new as said before you have a warranty (hopefully you won't ever need to use it). Also with it being new you won't find any hidden surprises the former owner or owners "forgot about" during the sale.

Another thing to think about. GMW's are popular amongst us here on the board but not everyone knows what they are.

Say a couple years down the road you go into a shop and try and work a trade for something new. The Charvel will be worth more in trade solely because of name recognition alone. None of the local shops here have every heard of a GMW. They wouldn't know the differece between them and Warmouth. To them it's just another strat copy.

Plus I'm a little of a Charvel snob.

Re: Poll: Used GMW Strathead or New Charvel?

As much as I hate to say it, I'd probably take the Charvel first, just because I know Jacksons are quality and I'm curious by nature. The GMW I know is going to be good so I can always sell the Charvel if I don't like it and get the GMW. Which sounds kinda shitty when I say it but there it is. As good as I think Lee's work is, I still prefer J/C. If I ever get another custom (not by any means a certainty) its gonna be a Charvel, but I don't doubt I'll be getting a quality instrument.

Re: Poll: Used GMW Strathead or New Charvel?

Ok. I went with the new Charvie... My reasons are:

1- That you can find a store (Chuckles, you did say you had a store within driving distance that had a few right?) that has a few and pick the best one of the bunch.

2- As Sully said, Warranty.

3- You had a dozen GMW's and I do remember quite a few of them I might add, and you said that you did not think they were all that great. You did have a few though that you liked right? Silver GMW was your fav at one time right? Getting off the path here....

Anyway... Have you taken each one for a drive yet? Can you get them in the same room together and see which one gets the gig?

Re: Poll: Used GMW Strathead or New Charvel?

Hey Chris, long time no hear. Heres my opinion so just take it for what its worth. I have 2 GMW that I will never part with. To me the feel and the quality is incredible. Its just like they were built to fit my hands.
I have played 5 of the new Charvels. 1 strat head and 4 pointes. They were decent guitars, but each one just had somthing I didnt like. whether it being a bad fret job or not the best of paint jobs. Im not going to get into any arguments with this. Its just my opinion and everyone is entitled to theres. I just think they are overpriced for what they are. I saw them at GC when I was out in Georgia. $1700 to $1800 for a single hum Floyded guitar is just crazy. I really think the GMW is better quality and the prices are unbeatable. I have a single hum Floyded one that cost me under $1300 shipped with a case.
Like I said you get whats best for you. I just think you are paying alot more money to have a Charvel logo on the headstock.

New Charvel .. Warranty is easier and the neck profiles are very similar to my originals ..

I am sure Chuckles has had a few dud Charvels in his day too, Like I said earlier, If you can get your hands on both at the same time then the decision will be much easier to make. The Charvel will hold its resale better in the long run. The GMW gets you a custom made guitar... Both are great.

Street price on both guitars are about the same.

The only GMW guitars I like are the Empires. The rest of them are copies IMHO. I voted for a new Charvel. Who cares about resale value or whatever. Charvels ROCK.
If I had to go another route I would look at Performance Guitars. Especially those Demartini models. Cool..
