I had an Epi. Paul once and although it looked good with its transparent finish, it felt every bit as cheap quality-wise as it was money-wise. That guitar was traded very quickly. Maybe I got one of the bad ones.

The lower priced Epi's are the ones with the inconsistent build quality and the cheaper hardware. I have an Epi Zakk, an Epi Slash, and an Epi John Connolly and they all are very nice and hold their own against my Gibson Voodoo LP and Gibson LP Swamp Ash Studio.
The Epi Elitists seem OK, but they aren't exactly cheap. The Korean stuff is pretty mediocre, just buy a Samick LP knock off for a lot less $$$ because it is the same guitar.
For a inexpensive LP type guitar, the Dean EVO's are a lot cheaper and seem nicer than the Epis.
I had 2 Epis at one time. A Std and a Custom. They were ok after pickup and machine head upgrades. I got rid of both and bought a Gibson LP Custom. Soooo much happier.

Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong.

I bought an Epi LPC to cure my LP GAS cuz, like you, I didn't want to spend the duckies on a real one. I've changed a lot of things on it (tuners, hardware, pups, electronics) which made a world of difference. Only problem is that, as much as I like the way it plays and sounds, I just can't get used to it.

This was my experience exactly and by that time I had way too much $$ in it for what it was. Plus the first time I played it the edge of the nut broke off. So then I went and bought a 54 reissue LP.

You can make a Korean Epi LP better, but let's look at what you need to do:
New Epi LP - $450 or so
Pair of Duncans or Dimarzios - $150
New quality pots, caps, switch, jack and wiring - $50
New tuners - $35-55
New nut professionally installed - $50-75
Pro fret level (if needed) - $50-100
New bridge (when the cheapo stock bridge starts sinking in the middle) - $45
So minimum you will need to invest close to $750 minimum to make it a gigable guitar. You can find used USA Hamers for that kind of loot. Might as well buy a good guitar right away.
Heh. I just bought a Gibson Studio Les Paul and an Epiphone Zakk Wylde. I'm sure the pickups in the Epi will have to go. The LP Studio has the 490/498 pair which I'm not a huge fan of - we'll see.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.
