Is the one on the left also a Driskill? That one's really cool!! I couldn't find that or any other body shape on their site besides the one on the right.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Sorry my mistake, the black quilt is a McNaught, guitar on the right is the Driskill. Both belong to the same owner, he was posting them together to show the body differences.
Come and get one in the yarbles, if you have any yarbles, you yunick jelly thou!

I like theses a lot and I AM NOT a fan of the PRS look (never actually played one though). I like how the horns look sorta evil. Like part Demon (is that the evil looking soloist-y Jackson?) part PRS.

You would be a fan if you played one. My 2 PRS guitars are absolutely outstanding.
The guitars on this guys site are beautiful.

I've played PRS (several actually) they are all over the place around here, probably because the factory is just a stone's throw away. And while they play very nice they do not IMO justify the high price tag when compared to much nicer looker guitars like Warrior and Driskill (McNaught I'll leave out because his prices are just way to high). Ya know a good boutique guitar with very nice prices? Zion. Their guitars play incredibly well and while they have nice tops and some odd woods they are more traditional in design and more like upscale strats.

I have to agree big time. There are waaaay too many derivative PRS designs out there right now: McNaught, Warrior, Baker, Jaros, and all of Ed Roman's brands just to name a few off the top of my head.

Bakers are generally much heavier on the Les Paul than the PRS, unless you're talking about the Roman Bakers, which Ed has pretty much turned entirely into PRS Custom 24 clones.

Re: And I thought McNaughts were amazing....

I appreciate Joe Driskill's approach and skills, but the guitars just seem kind of overbuilt and sort of gaudy looking to me. A lot of these boutique guys kind of overdo things, carbon fiber in the necks, oversized truss rods, epoxy glue, etc. It kind of sucks the organic qualities and resonance out of the guitar. The older I get, the more I get into the less-is-more approach.

I like the JET Guitars. These just look unbalanced to me. And no, you don't have to purchase JET guitars through Ed Roman. There are other dealers.

I'm definitely not a fan of the shape but the cocobolo one is simply beautiful. That wood just beats the hell out of most koa you see today. Imagine that wood on a neck thru Jackson or BC Rich!

Re: And I thought McNaughts were amazing....

I'd be very suprised if Jackson would build a cocobolo guitar. My friend the guitar builder said its such a nasty wood to work with he only uses it for fingerboards. I've seen a couple places that uses it for necks and its commonly used as a back and side wood for high end acoustics. His problem was mostly with the dust which is very toxic and irritating but alot of people (and someone on either this thread or another) mention that its very difficult to glue as well. Driskill probably has less of a problem cause of the glue he uses.

The ironic thing is that alot of wood suppliers have a fair stock of cocobolo, its not NEAR as rare as many other woods (such as koa) but its reputation keeps most people away. In my opinion (along with zircote and bocote) its one of the most beautiful "unfigured" woods out there.

I'm not a fan of the driskill shape either, JET guitars are very cool, never played one but I've heard good things...if you buy from someone other than Ed Roman.

Zion is more in the Anderson territory, but they've been making excellent quality guitars for years. I've owned several of them over the years, and they've all been excellent guitars, especially for the money.
