    RARE LP Custom expert apprasial needed! BIG PICS

    Hey,

    This guitar is owned by a close friend. I know you guys just LOVE that. [img]/images/graemlins/poke.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] Any info would be appreciated, yes it will be up for sale, though this is not the topic of this post.

    Serial number is 2111xx. 3 piece neck, pancake mahogany body, pickups have never been tested or even removed from the guitar. My friend bought it from the 1st owner less than 6 months after he purchased it in 1974.

    It's been regularly maintained by a local luthier, but hasnt' been played much. A bit of the gold on the pickups and bridge has worn off. Good indicator of how much playing time this guitar has recieved over the years...

    Any info you "experts" can provide me would be greatly appreciated.

    I need someone's insight to current value, and opinions whether this is a ash or maple topped guitar. It appears to be ash to me. Regardless, here are pictures for everyone to enjoy!

    With a good ad on ebay should get up to 2k(The last two were in that range) Norlin-era LPCs usually go for around 1.3k-1.7k but all-Maple ones are pretty rare and because of that have their own special market(also partly because of Zakk Wylde). The top looks Maple to me and I don't think Gibson used Ash for tops at any point in time, at least not for the Blonde Customs.

        Sounds a bit low for a 1973 Custom?? Judging by ebay completed auctions, that's about the range for a 73 Deluxe... then again, I don't know much about LPs.

                $2000 seems about fair. I like how that guitar looks, but I never understood why 70s Les Pauls have such high price tags, because personally to me they're the worst ones...I'd rather have a new one than one of those.

                  Overall, a beautiful example of the era though.

                      They don't when you consider a new one has a street of 3K. 70's Les Pauls are much like the Strats of the same era; considered inferior to the older and newer ones, but you can find some great ones if you look hard enough. I used to buy and sell a lot of these guitars, and I actually found a black '76 Custom back in '91 that I have kept to this day. It plays and sounds so good I could never bring myself to sell it. If you find a good one, these Les Pauls can be one of the best deals going.

                        I say with the maple board and how incredibly clean it is that someone out there will pay 3k for it. $2500 for sure. I think now is not the time to sell, though. That's one to hold on to for another 2-5 yrs and then sell.
