Why are '70s LPs desireable? Two words: maple neck.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Sadly, you can't make that generalization since the maple neck was only available from '78 to '81. I believe.

I love my 1970 Les Paul, they are getting bigger and bigger because 1960's and 50's Les Pauls have sky rocketed in price, and they are as close to vintage mojo that people desire.

I don't normally gravitate towards LPs but THAT is a sweet looking mother.

I thought the maple neck was pretty much the norm throughout the '70s, at least on LPCs. That '74 pictured in this thread has a maple neck, as did my old '76 natural-finish LPC.

My 1970 LP is Mahog, I don't think the 70's was a very consistant years though.

Yeah, I don't think Gibson was capable of making a consistent cup of coffee back then, let alone two consistent guitars. Funny, though, I've always had a soft spot for the late '70s-early '80s LPs, though--those are the only ones I've ever owned, and the ones I had rocked.

I may be wrong, but it seems like most of the maple-necked ones I've seen were from the mid-late '70s, and were mostly Customs, but that could just be because the Customs are the only ones I'm interested in.

my 73 has a mahogany neck; you can see the wood in some parts where the finish has worn.

The guitar pictured in this thread was a special order 73 as the story goes. It was purchased in 74 when the person who ordered it couldn't afford it, and was then sold to my friend several months later. It was appraised in 1998 much higher than any price mentioned here so far.

Appraised by who? These weren't bringing anywhere close to what people are quoting here back in '98. There are way too many "appraisers" out there with no clue as to what they are doing. If it was not appraised by a significant player in the vintage market (such as George Gruhn) then the appraisal doesn't really carry any weight. The newest Vintage Guitar magazine actually talks about these guitars, and although rare when compared to other 70's LP Customs, they are not that hard to come by with a thorough search. If you could get toward the high end of what the members here have suggested, you would be doing well. If you got more, my hat is off to you. Most of my adult life has been spent managing a Gibson dealership (I left in '99) and attending the vintage guitar shows (to this day) and I've never seen a production LP Custom from this era go for over 3K, no matter what the condition and finish were.

My first Les Paul Custom, that I bought new in 1975 had a 7 piece maple top!!! I thought that was normal because all the ones I looked at then had 5-7 pieces butted together. Is that insane or what! I don't know if they were trying to save wood or cut costs.

I would second the motion to try the Les Paul forum. There are very helpful members there, and you'd get a pretty accurate answer.

If you can handle it and play it, then you are one lucky dude. It beats the hell out of buying on on E-Bay or whatever.
