• Double neck guitars

I would like a Gibson SG 12/6, but funds prohibit that right now. But, does anyone own or play a double neck 12/6, and who makes a good quality one for an intermediate price?
Not an urgency, but I may be interested in the future in purchasing one of these things.

MusicYo did a Steinberger version a while back.

Re: Double neck guitars

I own an Gibson SG 6/12. It's a 2001 Alpine White EDS-1275. I wanted one for years, and saved all of my "toy" money for a full year to get it.

I'll probably never sell it, but it isn't a very practical guitar. It's very neck-heavy, weighs a ton, and I am not a fan of the thick necks on it. I would be interested in trying one of the Jackson-style doublenecks that have the extra tuners at the rear of the guitar, as that should help the balance issue somewhat.

It's more of a novelty. I bought it to play Xanadu by Rush, and it is a beautiful, unique instrument. But it's not the kind of thing you get out and play every day.

Epiphone makes a version of the Gibson 1275, I have seen them and they are almost exact copies, except for the headstock and logoing. they retail for like 899.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

My wife just looked at me stupid and basically said the same thing. A novelty, though I've been doing the 12 string Hotel California thing. Just had this fleeting though about also jumping into harmonies when the lead player comes in.

I have now clue what else I would use it for.
I'm sure I could find something though.

I had an Ibanez lawsuit EDS-1275 copy. It was awesome. I used to use it when we'd play Children of the Damned and To Tame a Land - folks loved it. I put Dimarzio's in it 'cuz the stock pickups were more like microphones

Re: Double neck guitars

The old Ibanezes were amazing; I had one as well back in the day. Recently though, I've see OPL (OLP?, I don't know! lol) doublenecks in stores going for about 400 brand new. the one I actually tried to play had something like 9 strings on the 12 string neck, so I just played the 6 a bit. It might do in a pinch, and may be easily available through GC (but an old Ibanez would certainly smoke it).

You're close. Imagine the feedback associated with that through a Carvin X100B half stack with a Boss DS-1. That thing squealed louder than Ned Beatty in The Deliverance.

You can get one of the old '80s Carvin DN-612 guitars for about $800-900 used. They sometimes go a bit higher, particularly for mint-condition and unusual finishes/woods.

I had a '70s era Gibson 6/12 a LONG time ago, and it was awesome. Easily the best 12-string neck I've ever played. Thing that sucks about them is that fret access is terrible above about the 15th fret. Personally, I'd go for one of the old Carvins. Much cooler looking, and with lot of switches and knobs that you can use to impress the ladies...

The Epi and the OLP are a pretty good buy INMHO. I have played both. I actualy liked the OLP better. Another option would be to go through Warmouth and build your own. It would be a Fender-ish looking double when your done, but you can do it your was for a 1/3 of the cost. Check out some of the customer pics they have on their site. It's a P-bass/Strat combo, but looks cool.
